hmm i have no doubt you can find a car in an auction... the price would depend on the type of work needed to fix it..

hondas and nissans go for good money at auctions, it might not be as cheap as you think. i dont think it would be common to find an EF there unless its a sedan.
i know poeple that bought altimas and things off auctions. you just really dont know wheres its been, the best you can do is get a tune up and cross your fingers, thats not really a smart way to buy a car, in the private market i guess you can get a lemon too, but its also easy to tell how the car was maintained based on what the person is saying.
could they be lying their *** off, sure. but its better then knowing nothing at all.

I've bought both of my hatches from auctions. 1st one in 98 (85 std) for $400. I had to replace the axle, intake manifold gasket, and clutch. It was the biggest beater ever. If you turned right the driver door would fly open. The speedo and gas gage never worked. No AC or heat. It had a brand new paint job though. Lasted three years.
I bought my 88 dx on ebay for $1500. Car ran great for 5000 miles until my driving habits changed. Killed the D. You can find a good looking car at an auction. Good running? That depends on how much you want to do. If i bought another car from an auction i would assume the worst and just replace everything.
Whatever happens, change the timing belt ASAP. I've broken three so far.
