Well, at least you don't have the fancy pink title a lot of them have.
A lmiited slip differential works to make sure some torque is going to both driving wheels in situations where one driving wheel might start to slip.
With a normal open differential, all the power will tend to go to the wheel that has started slipping, since that's the path of least resistance.
A limited slip differential will make sure that some power is going to the other wheel, which will help a car get through a high-G turn faster than a car with an open differential. The open differential car will be slowed because all the power's going to a wheel with no traction.
There are several ways to make a limited slip: clutch packs (Positraction GM), fluid drive (Nissan) and gears (Honda/Acura Torsen axles).
