Default D16z6 INFO

For all you out there,

I am pretty new to the import world, I just bought an 89 Crx Si. Just wondering about the d16z6 swap, from the 92-95 civics, or del sols, If it is and easy swap or not. I dont know a lot of people with this setup in a CRx. I was wondering if I should just do a b16a swap. I do not have a crapload of money either. If anyone has done this kind of a swap let know what has to be done. I have heard that the d16z6 can out perform some b16 and b18 engines. I have also heard this is the best swap to do the d16z6 sohc vtech.

Thanx
JP

im not too familiar with the d16 swaps, and the B16 swaps are pricey and not the easiest, but what I would recommend is the JDM ZC (130 HP) swap. Kits can be found online for around $1000 or so, everything needed. One of my friends threw in a ZC to his 89 rex SI, and it outruns his mercedes E420. I'm personally going to do that to my 91 civic Si this winter, when its hibernating in the garage (Idaho = mounds of snow on residential streets that dont get cleared up for weeks, so lowered cars act as snowplows ) The DOHC ZC is a great platform to go off of, in my opinion. Bolt in is the greatest Pro with that swap. For the money, you can't go wrong, IMO.

The D16z6 a.k.a the "Mini-Me" is a z6 vtec head off of 92-95 more commonly mated with an a6 block. The combination of the a6 block with z6 head offers a little more compression than if you had a full d16z6 motor. You can run a z6 head in OBD0 format with a a6 distributor rigged to fit the z6 head and some form of RPM vtec activation switch. Or you can convert to OBD1 with the help of a P28 ECU and a OBD0-1 conversion harness. You can also use the z6 or y8 intake manifold for better air flow.

Depending on what you can find the parts for, a z6 head with all parts mated to an a6 will run you anywhere from $300-600.

z6 head
z6 distributor
z6 spark plug wires
92-95 "Si" timing belt
z6 or 3 ply y8 headgasket
OBD0-1 conversion harness
P28 ECU

-Premtive maintainence parts

New water pump
Oil change
Coolant change

go mini-me or full d16z6 swap like me
its really a very easy swap, but like with everything always expect little bullshit problems, so if you haven't done anything like this before it helps to bring a friend that has. oh and you'll be happy with how the z6 performs in the CRX with some nice bolt ons and a little tuning

D16Z6 into 89 hatch:

Engine, P28 ECU, headers and tranny ('93) 550 + 150 shipping
Clutch and regrind flywheel 175
OBD0 to OBD1 harness 200
Water pump, timing belt, thermostat, belts, gastkets and seals approx 300-400
Misc parts from wrecker (plugs, wiring hanesses, etc) 100
CAI 150
New exhaust 650

I have sold the extra yet (D15b engine in need of rebuild, '93 si tranny).

When I compared the costs to a full rebuild of the D15B the total would have been close to the same. I picked up the engine from a guy doing a B series swap into his CRX. It actually took me about 2 months to do the swap, but there were several weekends I would not have time to work on it, and the best Honda wreckers in my area is only open M-F (whne I am at work) and Sat. Usually go up on a Sat am with my list, come back and get a couple of hours into the work and figure out I needed another plug or harness or something, so work stops until the next week. Also, about 3 weekends spent redoing the whole front end (coil overs, ball joints, axles, etc.)

*****all prices CAD$*******

Most of the time is spent on the conversion .... wiring .... research all you can, practice soldering, get a good multimeter, make lots of notes, and trace every connection and wire back three times.

Hey bro thanx a lot for the advice. Now would u think the b16 swap is any easier, and if i should go with the swap instead of the d16z6. In the long run would the b16 be cheaper than the d16z6. I have been doing lots of research since im pretty new to the world of imports. I trying to learn as much as I can. Again thanx for the help.

b16a swap is gonna be a little more difficult, you can either go with the conv. harness to obd1 and run a p28 or run a reprogrammed si ecu and a vtec controller and stay obd0, cant really say how much its gonna run you, because i get everything for the swap free. and with the d16z6, you can put a turbo kit together for $500-$700.
