Purchasing 5th gen Prelude: no clue what owner has done before....
k I'm purchasing a 5th gen prelude, 97-99 looking in the 80k milage range. i know when i purchase it i will need to change timing belt, change oil, tranny fluid, power steering fluild, what else do i need to do to make sure i take care of it right? also....how much would a shop charge to change timing belt and tranny fluid? thanks

Not on a H22 if it's done right. By right I mean replace the water pump, tensioner pulley, autotensioner unit, timing belt, and balance shaft belt. Expect around $700-$900.
Do not even consider an automatic. The MH6A trans is junk.
Check for smooth shifting into 5th at 70mph plus, and make sure reverse drops in smoothly.

Look under the oil cap. If there is crap built up on it, run. A little is ok, but black **** everywhere is a sign that the oil wasn't changed as often as it should have been.

CYA and double check the VIN number. Many of the base automatics have been converted to manual. I know, I've done it.

By checking the 7th digit of the VIN number. A 1 in the 7th place is a 5 speed manual, a 2 would indicate automatic.
