I've been considering doing an LS Vtec build up on my Integra, however, living in the bay area, cops will always be an issue. Those of you with a LS Vtec in their cars, do you have any issues with smog and/or cops? Do i need to get it BAR'd? Are there qualifications for the compatibility of the head? For instance, do i need a 95 and up head for my 95 LS? Thanks in advance..
lsvtec will never be able to get a bar tag. its illegal to swap heads on engines unless they are the same as the original in CA.
i live in la and cali has the worst smog lows in the world
any one who thinks of moging there car should make sure they can find a hook up on illegal smog first

I would have no problems with smoggin my car because my father owns a shop, however, i do fear getting pulled over and a police officer citing me for having a vtec head on a non vtec block. I was just curious if there are any alternatives to making this set up legal
Well, you may be able to pass a sniffer test if everything is basically stock. But an ls/vtec isn't worth it if everything is stock. If the technician knows what to look for at a normal smog place, they can notice the block code doesn't match the head. But the actual smog test isn't that big of an issue, you can always get a hookup every 2 years for a couple hundred bucks.
The real issue is getting the car BAR certified and not getting hassled by cops. An LS/VTEC will never pass BAR, they do check the VINs and the setup. It has to be exactly like a car with the same engine, so if a Civic has a GSR motor, all of the smog devices for the GSR have to be in place. There is no car that uses an LS/VTEC, so it won't even come close to being inspected and certified. So, if you don't mind paying a couple hundred for illegal smog, and run the risk of getting sent to the state ref, then you can do LS/VTEC.

If thats true, I'd like to see that, because I've always heard (straight from the cops and referee) the same thing the MAV3RICK and purplegsr said. You can only get STOCK/original motors passed. Only mods that can be done are ones with CARB EO#'s

hahah, im from san jose. I got pulled over for going 120 on the freeway on the way home from oakland runs. ************ doesnt even know what it is. He poped up my hood and only cited me for cold air intake and msd cap. I got pulled over once at in out by eastridge too, they dont really know about ls vtec.
The best thing for you to do is not put on a loud *** exhaust, if u run stock exhaust u will never get pull over. do the ls vtec swap u wont get screw over, just no exhaust.

There was a build up of a CA smog legal LS/VTEC in the July or August 2003 issue of Turbo Magazine. I don't know how they did it, but they claimed it was legal in CA
COPS ARE STUPID... don't worry about them knowing LS/Vtec
smog...you just gotta know a hookup. you hear of ppl just droppin in other engines to pass smog and then yankin it out again...
and yes... california has the stricted smog laws ever......

CITED 4 THE MSD CAP??? msd is 50 state legal and i u were doing 120 mph already then why the HELL did u stop stupid i would of keep going also when u get caught speeding and the speed is over a 100 mph the violation is twice as bad as a regular speeding ticket (CA law) and u r saying that u just got cited i thinks u lie

if this is true, swap a bone stock ls on, get pass the ref and then do the ls/vtec
this way, you have the BAR sticker already.

This is a good idea, however, since you already have an LS you should swap in a GSR temporarily. Pass BAR, the sticker will say something like:
Car
1995 Acura Integra LS
Engine
1998 Acura Integra GSR, 1.8L DOHC VTEC
You definitely want the VTEC info on the sticker, because if a cop pulls you over and wants to see your BAR certification, it should match the big letters on the head. That could actually work though, especially since your dad owns a shop and can get you smogged for free.

Whats the deal is there a way out of my exhaust ticket(in CA) since I am from out of state and have out of state tags(VA) or is CA going to try to screw me when I go to court? Does CA have that kind of jurisdiction?
I am not sure about the jurisdiction issue, like I said in your other thread. I would think that if you went to court, brought in a copy of your VA inspection receipt (the little pink checklist) and a copy of your smog test result, and your military ID - they would be inclined to say, fine, you are obeying VA law and are not required to register your car in CA due to military service.
They would probably ask you to put on your front plates, since it is also the law in VA. But if you were a GA resident, where they don't issue front plates, CA couldn't do anything about it.
