Default EX tranny vs. DX tranny - maximum speed

OK, here's the question...

I had problems finding the good EX tranny for my 1996 DX coupe (D16Y7)... I finally found decent EX tranny for great price and written 6-months guarantee...

But the seller told me a strange thing...

He said that my car will accelerate better but the I WILL LOOSE MAXIMUM SPEED... He said that my maximum speed will drop at least 15 mph...

Is that true?

And for tranny gurus and people that made this kind of swap...

What exact pros and cons can you say about swaping the EX tranny into DX engine???

Are there any cons?

Cos I don't see why I would loose maximum speed... if 1996 DX goes say 120 mph in 5th gear on 5500 rpm, why would my DX engine with EX tranny run any different... OK I know there are different gear ratios but I don't think that they are THAT different so I can loose 15 mph...

Cos I think EX maximum speed is not much lower or higher than DX... it is around 120 mph right?

So if EX can run 120 with it's tranny, why wouldn't DX run 120 with that SAME EXACT TRANNY?

Help me decide!!!

Should I go with EX tranny or repair my DX tranny (differential + final gear)?

I've seen and experienced an Ex go up to 130mph (around 5k or so on the tach) with no mods, if 130 isn't good enough for you, than you are either very crazy, or an insanely good driver with a taste for slightly illegal speeds

No you misunderstood me... 120 is very very enough for me so 130 is way better... I only wanted to know if I was going to loose max speed in comparison to DX tranny...

Just for the record, the car is DX coupe 1996 D16Y7 and this tranny is 1993 EX S20 P20B0000

If someone knows what are the may speeds in each gear for the EX, it would be a great help...

Thank you for quick replies

Yes, you would lose top speed since the ex tranny has mathematically higher gears. meaning, that the engine has to rev more to go the same speed. Your engine will be at a higher rpm to go the same speed with the ex tranny than the dx one. The difference will be little like 7 miles difference in top speed, not like you drive that fast, so i wouldn't worry about it.

Exactly.... How often to you drive at max speed? probably never. How often do you drive near top speed? probably rarely if ever (no logical need for it). So if you were to lose 15 mph off the top speed who cares?? Having a tranny that will give your car more lively performance and pep in everyday useage at the expense of some top end speed that you'd never use anyway makes perfect sense! Unless you're trying to set some sort of land speed record I don't know why you're worried about it..
