Emmisions failure, smelly exhaust, check engine code. You be the judge??!?
Okay I failed the Hydro Carbon part of the Emmsions test with a 487, with standard being around 220. Carbs were kinda high but were tollerable. What do you think my problem is guys, I know the car is running rich but why.
Setup: 91 Accord Hybrid. 98 JDM lude engine with stock injectors. P13 Jdm Ecu with limitors (sux). Ngk Plugs and wires. FPR set to 37psi.
Info: I get a O2 engine code whenever I go for long drives, running on an upgrade for an extended period, or drive over 100mph. Engine behaves real sluggish when the code is on. Exhaust smells like sulfur or gas all of the time.
Confusing Info: I get fairly good gas mileage still, the code disappears as soon as I restart the car again. (Off then On) Car drives normal after restart but is sluggish at anything under 3500 Rpms.
Where do you think my problem lies.???
Any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Catalytic Converter!!!! They clog over time and stop cleaning the exhaust (smell) the clogging slows the exhaust flow (low power) and the O2 starts getting bad readings (crappy gas milage). You may have also burnt out the O2 sensor.

Well that is the first for the Cat category. Most other people have said either the O2 Sensor or Temperature sensor. I do have the original CAT that came with the Accord from way back when, but I dont think you have though about all the symptoms. The car runs fine with anything above 4ooo Rpms. O2 sensor check engine light is not steady and would reset whenever the car is restarted. And I have a high HC count which means that too much gas is coming through the exhaust, which might null your clogged theory..??
Any comments welcome.

If you have the original CAT I am positive!!!! Replace the CAT. Do the O2 sensor as well, the high HC is from running rich, CAT's usually only last about three years!!!!
So should I look into a high/flow cat then since you would have me replace it as well as the O2 sensor.??
And since when do Cat only last 3 years??

Three years on a bad O2 sorry......n-e-way, sure you can look into a free flowing cat.....just make sure it isn't a racing cat. However, I don't think that they are worth the cost just get a new one, they are decent enough. You will not be able to tell by the Butt Dyno between a free flowing and a normal cat......they are only good on turbo or NOS engines.
Yeah well if anyone else can backup Spade's theories that would be nice. And thanks Spade for your insight on the matter..
Also, you might want to call a Smog repair shop and tell them that you have high HC's and they will tell you all the things that could be wrong.
