Help! Your ideas on repairing a flat tire
I have a nail in my tire. The shop says that because of the type of rubber in this Z rated tire (Yoko AVSi), he can't fix it. The nail is completely in the thread area.
Have you heard of such a thing?!
I did ask for repair from inside the tire cause I don't believe in the safety of other types of fix.

I had a plug put in one of my re010. You might want to take it to a goodyear tire store or somewhere like that. They told me that it lost its speed rating. Of course I'm a moron and took it up to 140 anyway.
Im sure that nail is going to void the speed rating...
Just dont drive it like you stole it and you'll be fine..and I would stay off the track with a plug.

Goto to a REAL tire place and get a patch on the inside. I have done this on many cars with no problems. The reason why you lose the speed rating is that the nail messes with the steal chords in the tire. The only kind of flat that is terminal is a sidewall flat of maybe a rip under the tread. But a nail hole under the tread is very repairable.
Cyberorth: If the sidewall is intact, it can almost definitely be patched (unless it was a HUGE nail
I think what they were trying to say is that on a high performance tire, plugging it will reduce the speed rating. I dont know about you, but I havent been up to 149+ recently...chicago traffic sucks

best idea Don't patch it get a new one. It may work if u just grandma drive it but if u run it hard it couple come apart on u and then your fucked. if it was my tire i would get a new one, don't risk it.

Well, I thought I knew a thing or two about cars!!! 'pparently not
Thank you all for your comments and help.
The nail is not very big, but I suppose it still disturbs the wire mesh just slightly. I would just get a patch, but if that means I have to always worry about how fast the new "rating" of the patched tire is, I would rather just get a new one. Grrr
Yell00ITR, Hi.
I left Il and am now in Ca, but thanks for remembering.
On a side note I have to say that it's become very easy to speed in Ca!!!
When I left LA in 1998, I was surprised of how Chicago drivers got away with speeding so much. My general fwy speed went up from 75 to 85mph. I worried that I would get many tickets as soon as I returned to LA. But suprisingly now in LA there are many faster cars on the fwy when I drive around 85mph
or
, I don't know.

well the only prob with getting a new one is... that yokohama stop making them! you might be able to find someone that has one?? get it patched from the inside.
I used to be a Professional Tire Technician...Well not really, I busted tires for a year and I think I know a little about patching them. Anyways, get it patched from the inside, make sure they use a relatively small patch(less weight/balancing issues), and if your really picky have a manager or a more experienced Tech do it. We charged $8, and it's well worth it. I believe it's really safe, and wouldn't change my current driving habits if I knew there was a patch in one or all of my tires.

Get new tires! Are you guys crazy I get a nail in one of my tires every other week, and have about a total of 10 do it your-self plugs and one patch. I drive hard as ****, turn hard as hell, run it in a 1/4mile with tons of wheel spin, and do near or over a 100mph every day. PLUG IT YOUR-SELF IF YOU KNOW HOW, or take it somewhere that knows how. Unless you have the type of cash to buy a Z rated tire every other week. F@#k that! Hope this helps I'm not joking.
P.S. I just installed my new tires because my stock ones were worn worn out, and already I have a nail in the RR & LF I guess I'll get two new tires next week
Yeah right! I've found a good Z rated tire is rather soft, and in the city the're to many road hazards Nails, forks, all kinds of sharp and not so sharp objects. Once again plug it, patch it what ever. Unless in sidewall, only then get a new tire.
