Default Project: Teh Frankenstien

Well it's officialy time for me to park the Prelude in the Garage for the Winter and begin it winter long transformation from H23 to VTEC.

This will make car #2 in the Garage undergoing transformation. (300zx to a drift car) I have most of my internals ready (Cams (skunk2), Cam Gears (AEM), Valves/Valve Springs/Valve Retainers, Pistons...) and I have my Turbo Kit (Turbonectics T3/T4 hybrid) on Order. The Head is getting ready to go to the Machine shop for cleanage and portage.
The same mechanic is also redoing my block and balancing. He has had MAJOR experieince with Honda's. He owns a Turbo H23 Civic. He also does all tuning work for our local "Tuner" Dealership. Some of the cars he's done can be found Here. He's doing al machining of the motor and helping me install so I can learn more about this motor.

Questions I have are few but what should I expect while doing the conversion? I have heard stories of Idleing problems after installation. Or is this just a bad idea all together. Any information will be helpfull. Thanks

-Brian

It's in Johnstown. I asked a friend of mine the name of it and I forget what he said. What you could do is just Contact Denny Dotson Automotive and ask them.

your using skunk2 cams on a turbo motor?? hmmm. Ive always been under the impression that OEM cams are good to about 500whp. Also, wouldent you want to go with a custom turbo cam for your application vs an off the shelf somewhat N/A cam ?

Well the previous owner of the cams (they we're never installed) had them machined after purchase to be set up to run well under n/a but still be withstanding for FI. At least this is what I was told...

Question: Since I have to change the Innermost Crank Pully to a H22 version, how will this varry from that of an H23? I'm not too experieinced in this matter but won't their be a size difference because of the H23 crank or is it just a direct swap and has more slots for the VTEC Timing belt?

True, true...you don't want a higher lift cam for a turbo engine. You want to use your OEM cams. Overlap is not good for boost.

You're lucky you have a shop that will help you install it
yourself and follow you through the process.

I had to either have them swap in my motor (w/o me)

Or do it myself (w/o them)

I chose the latter, and I'm glad I did

I agree your better off with stock cams then the skunk2's.

ok, if stock cams are the way to go, then I have those. (Purchased w/Head) But what about cam gears? Should I change them? I know they arent a part of the valvetrain but I may be wrong.

might want to look into some engine management if you are going to boost. cam gears fpr bigger injectors etc etc what HP number are you lookin for with this setup? cant boost any higher than 6-8 psi on stock internals and thats with a good tuner.

I've aready looked at this. I plan on running 6psi (40-60 hp increase) for now because of Tunning limitations. I've looked into Injector but am still undecided on which will provide me with the best results at my low boost level. Also have looked at Hondata P13 and other things.

Update:

Yesterday the head was sent away for Porting. The car now sits at Countryside Automotive accumulating the VTEC parts I am Missing for the swap.

These are my toy being put in the new head.

My Camshafts, Titanium Valve Retainers, Valve Springs, and Timing Gears.

My camshafts are machined by KMS Development. Any of their products can be found Here

My Timing Gears are AEM's new run of the TruTime Line. I have yet to have any experience with these but I was curious because of the fixed 3 Bolt lock problem which has now been changed to 5.
