Default 1989 Accord, manual transmisson question

I am changing the manual transmission in my son's 1989 Accord, (something blew apart inside and even cracked the case), and I need to know somthing.

Are 2 lines that I disconnected next to the speedometer cable cooling lines? The reason I ask is because automatic transmission fluid came out of those lines. With this being a manual tranny, I was just a bit confused.

If thats what they are, then that could be the reason this tranny blew apart, huh?

Yep... that would be correct. The VSS doubles as the oil pump for the variable assist power steering system, and the fluid you see is p/s fluid. Don't forget to top that off when you're all done, with "Honda" power steering fluid only
