Drove another R.. the R32
One of my closest friends just purchased a new VW R32. I really like the look of the car - it sits low on large wheels and has a nice mean stance. The sound is great really - it has a nice low rumble to it and it gets pretty loud at WOT. I asked him to open the hood and was disappointed to see a big plastic engine cover - I HATE that.
He let me drive it a bit tonight. I was overall impressed with the feel of the car. The steering was nice but seemed to float a bit over uneven surfaces. The suspension seemed well damped and was pretty stiff for factory springs, but the ride was comfortable. What I hated most was the gearbox - what a dog. Shifts were a chore and always felt heavy and 'clanky' - something I would hate to live with everyday after the sweet Honda gearbox.
The R32 no way communicates to the driver the way the ITR does and it feels at times that you are isolated from the road, but it is a quality car that is fast out of the box and has some nice potential.
Now I need to get him out to the track with it...

yes it is awesome as is from the factory (3.2L, 240 horses, 236lbs-ft@3200rpms !!!!) yes it also has great capabilities for beyond.
BUT in the end it is what it is, A BEEFED UP GOLF And most importantly for 30,000+, another slew of cars come to mind IMHO.
Thanks for the mini review
BTW: how do it's seats feel ?

The bolstering of the seats is awesome, but they are leather and a bit slippery...

As opposed to your beefed-up Integra RS (at best) or re-skinned Civic (at worst)?
IMO, it has several features that would make it a better daily driver than the turbo-based cars you're undoubtedly comparing it to.

For 30k, I would have to think hard about buying a re-skinned anything. However, a newer VW product seems like a good base, quality-wise at least.
I recently rode in a re-skinned Lancer (Evo MR) that goes like stink but still feels like a Hertz rental car inside with some Recaros.
For 30k, I would be more inclined towards S2000/ G35...

Exactly, but our friend Jeff likes incorporating my vehicles into this discussion trying to somehow warrant the Golf's price
