Default Do you guys have a habbit of Melting Distributors?

This post is really for a friend of mine, but i never heard of this before. Today i get a call from my friend saying his car's not running. I couldnt really trouble shoot his car because i was at work. But i call him after work and he tells me he melted his distributor (it was a Autozone lifetime warrenty one) This is the 3rd distributor that his gone through.

Now why the hell would his cap and distributor melt!?!? The car is a 91 DX hatch w/ D15b2 with a 4speed manuel tranny in it. He has a intake and exhaust and 8.5mm MSD wires. The only thing i could think of is maybe the MSD wires melted the distributor. Is 8.5mm to big on a stock car like that? I know nothing about civics under the 92 civics. TIA!

EDIT: NEW QUESTION!!!!!

There is a rip in my friends shift linkage boot. The piece that connects to the tranny. We are wondering how much is that going to cost and where can we get a replace meant boot, honda, autozone? There is alot of grease that looks like it has leaked out already due to the rip. So i would like to get that fixed. Thanks.

It is a boot that goes around the area where number 12 is.

TIA!

The bearing inside the distributor failed and overheated, which melted the rotor and cap.

Remove the distributor from the car...

And tell me you can rotate the shaft by hand and show me how wrong I can be.

He already returned it to Autozone for a new one. But he said that the rotar was like new, no problems or melting to it at all. Just the cap and mainly the ignitor.

tell him to check wires and make sure he is not arching or grounding out to something inside the distributor.

ok, are you talking about the Distributor cap or Distributor itself?? My car was running fine and then started to sputter. It died and I found the rotor totally melted on the dizzy shaft! I replaced the dizzy cap and rotor and went on my merry way. Later when I started the car (90 Honda sedan) it was making a sqeaking noise which I thought was a belt. I thought to myself I'll check the belts later. It ended up being the dizzy itself, I took it apart and couldn't rotate the shaft.
7PSI CRX is right on. I ended up at the junk yard and pulled another dizzy from another 90-91 civic. No problems so far. I guess the lubricant in the shaft bearing goes dry after, well My civic has 143,000+/- miles on it. And I drive it hard sometimes, going 80-85 down the freeway
Don't know what to say except replace the dizzy if you don't want to make the situation worse??
good luck,
Elmerfudd

Ok this is what he told me. He said that the ignitor melted completely along with almost everything inside the distributor but the rotor was untouched (his using it in the new one). That completely boggles me.

The guy at autozone said he was having the same problem because the motor revs high on a 4 speed tranny. He said that he got a 5sp tranny and it never had a problem with the distributor. Does that make sense to you guys?

Yea he already replaced the whole distributor, and now it works somewhat fine. We were more wondering why that happened.

Also what about the shifter part?

OBD0 distributors are known to have shoddy bearings
who knows.... maybe the AZ ones make the problem worse by rebuilding them using Chinese bearings

You can get the boot at the dealer. It's pretty cheap. "have fun taking out the bitch pin" tho ;-)

thats because its an autozone distributors, they suck thats why they have a lifetime warranty, id get a new one from honda, there pricey but he wont have to change it for a long time.

well if your still having problems with the distributor. I have a D15b2 dist. No cap on it, but i'll sell it for cheap, it has SI plugs on it, so you'de have to use yours or his rather. But its nothing more than poping the pins out (easy) and swapping the plugs.

Why is he using the 4 speed tranny on the D15b2????...hm i wonder if that would disturb the dist. because of its long gear's. i would think so.. hm.. anwyayz

Sound like the bearing in the dist is bad, causing excessive heat.

About the shift boot thing...i dont think the tranny is leaking because that boot is torn. The boot is not there to act as an oil seal. Im pretty sure there is a seal behind that boot that is need of replacement. I have seen many hondas without that specific boot and no leak whatsoever. I also heard its a very common problem with that seal going bad.
