a question on insurance and motorcycles
Some states have what they called an "uninsured motorist fee" where you go to the DMV, pay like $300 and they give you a card that says you have no insurance by legal means. Some states, like Virginia, require you to have just liability so if you hit someone the other person will get their car/limbs fixed. I have no clue about Arizona.
The actual bike insurance is not the problem for me, it's the big $$$ premium on my $750k life insurance policy that's the killer (I also have an add'l $1m coverage thru work). When we had our girl (4 years ago), my wife made me buy the $750k policy........."You want to continue risking your life on that f'ing bike, you better have enough insurance to take care of us". Oh, my wife just loves my bike.....I park it over on my side of the garage because I'm afraid she's going to just run it over one of these days.
Well in florida originally you didnt have to carry insurance at all, but are required to wear a helmet at all times. (If you own the bike outright you were ok, if you owed a financial institution the financial institution generally required you to have insurance though.)
Many bike shops would get you to buy the bike, transfer the balance to a credit card that they offered. (HONDA CARD)
Within the last year or two they changed the rules because the harley riders protested the helmet law so they could ride without a helmet. They changed the law so that if you ride without a helmet you have to carry 10,000 in liability in case you are injured. Now if you are riding without a helmet and you are stopped you have to prove you have the 10,000 in coverage otherwise you get a ticket for not wearing a helmet. When you are riding without a helmet, the cops now have no clue if you have the insurance or not, so several people are riding without the helmets and no insurance still.
I personally will never ride without my helmet, dont wanna mess up this pretty grill
When i first got my bike i looked into insurance (before the helmet law)
State farm wanted 4 grand a year, and that was with no medical coverage. If i get into an accident, they pay for the bike and the other car. At the time, that was about what I payed for my f3 so i laughed at them. This was with 2 other vehicles under my name and the policy was my dads family policy with 6 vehicles including my 3. I was 20 at the time, had a crx, camaro, and my bike, no points and no accidnets. Many other companies simply refused to offer me a policy. I havent checked reguarding the policy changes after the helmet law change, but I still look at it this way if i dump it in the ditch and total it, I can buy a new one each year. My medical insurance from work will cover me incase I have an accident.
