I would go with a type r. more things to go wrong with a Ls/Vtec, and a type r is way less maintainance.

If you build the ls/vtec with mods...it will out perform the type R. But it is a high maintainance motor. It will cost close to the type R price tag of around 5K also...But a type R with a few mods will perform pretty close to a full built ls/vtec

However, the B20 with a VTEC head even though the maintenace is high will out perform the TypeR and will be a less likely target for thiefs.

. this discussion will probably go on forever, but do the research. LSvtec bored to 2.0L(fully built, not some half *** job) that will put out well over 220hp to the wheels, with a TQ curve that would make a domestic cringe, or a type R motor that put out 180+ hp stock(oh yea, to the CRANK).
Hope you have $10 grand to build a motor for 220hp to the wheels

i followed hx guy and did this:

jdm b20b block - 1000
crower cams/springs/retainers - 850
skunk2 manifold - 300
cam gears - 230
b16 tranny - 450
ls ecu - 250
s-afc - 300
axles/mounts/and everything else for the swap - around 1000

thats 4300 for everything you need. 170 hsp and 140 ft/lbs of torque approx. and that revs to 8000. and will smoke a typer swap.

you lost me dragon. the ITR is a factory product, build from that yes. so are the b18a/b and b20's. just like you said, start with something factory and build from there. LOVE YOUR SIG TOO. im not saying the type r is a bad motor. jsut as you are, im biased. i have dealt with IDIOTS AND LSVTECS to see them blow. why, cause they cant build one. i have also dealt with pros running LSVTECS. SWEET DEAL THERE. putting out very little money to make a reliable daily driven LSVTEC. as for comparing the two, i was comparing $$$$ wise. if you spend 5 grand on a LSVTEC set up and 5 grand on a type r this is what you get: 1) a fully built LSR or 2) a bone stock type R.
kris
1)fully built LS-R~~>this sh_t won't last 100,000 miles
-OR-
2)a "stupid" bone stock type-R that has factory reliability...

yeah thats a real tough one.

and how many of you are going to keep the same motor for 100,000 miles? let alone the same car?

in terms of reliability, ask jeff at import builders if you can build a reliable ls/vtec.
ls/vtecs are nice when built right.

I prefer to start with a Factory product and upgrade the components... ... I believe in the HONDA product... and if you start out with a RELIABLE product and only change and upgrade the components then you will have a More reliable product capable of More power. ...
Yea totally. I think there was a reason that Honda didn't mate an LS block with a VTEC head, or with a B20 block.

Exactly what I was going to say.. for 5 grand... you can have a built ls/vtec or a stock type R. I know people think its not fair to compare power number of a fully built engine vs. a stock one...If a type R had all te mods you mentioned on your previous post Dragon...then that R motor would cost twice as much as the LS/VTEC.
Its true the ls/vtec requires more tuning then a stock R, but a built R would also require maintainance as well. No built motors are maintainance free..If you build a type R motor with simular mods as the ls/vtec... it will require the same tuning...so the arguement of " ls/vtec=high main. and Type R=low main." doesnt really apply. I agree.. the R motor is a great motor. But I like to tinker with my car... so I dont mind working on it. If I wanted a "true" maintainance free daily driver... I'd just go with a B18C and leave it bone stock.

Are you saying that LS block and VTEC heads aren't honda products? Also, if honda did make a factory ls/vtec, it would be in direct competition with GSR's. So in a sense, they did mate an ls block with a vtec head, and called it the B18C.
