Default Check Engine light on...NO VTEC!!

k..since i had a new timing belt put in my car last week, my car has been awesome and vtec worked great..kicked in at 5000 in every gear, the whole works.
the vtec was working perfectly all last night as i drove around town with friends...but tonight i drove the car for the first time since last night and after about 5 minutes of driving, i noticed the check engine light was on...but nothing was happenin in the car, it was running fine, no problems...

then i thought of vtec and i tried it and it didnt kick in at all...got to 5000 in 3rd i think and no vtec, just kept going normal...still no problems with the engine in any other way, but just no vtec in any gear...looked under the hood, didnt see anything outta the ordinary (dont really know what i was looking for)..anyone got any suggestions or answers as to why this happened? i have no vtec now, it sucks cause i was just about to try to sell my car and i cant have this problem...also i just had the oil drained and replaced as it got fixed. thanks...this sucks

yep..just got the oil drained because i needed a small hole in the oil pan welded..and he refilled it..and for the past week since i got it back it has been running great, vtec and everything..and now all of a sudden this happens...a check engine light and no vtec...still have full oil level though...god this sucks. i just spent 550 bucks on getting a shitload of stuff fixed like new timing belt, cooling fan fixed, and the oil pan welded, i really dont need to spend hundreds more getting this fixed. my dad is gonna kill me since we finally thought everything was fixed after over a month.

Congrats, did downey by any chance mention how "checking for vtec" with a CEL on really isn't such a good idea?

sorry here was the problem...i checked what code it was throwing and it was code 21 which is defective or unplugged circuit for the vtec solenoid/defective solenoid. so i looked at the wiring for the solenoid and sure enough the wire going straight up to the bottom of the solenoid was broken...it looked like the bolt holding the bracket for my coolant overflow resovoir rusted off and left the resovoir hangin freely in the engine bay, and that must have caused the wire to break cause the wire is right next to the tank...so i just jammed the broken wire back up into the little outlet hole in the plug going to the solenoid and the check engine light was on no more and the vtec worked great! now i just gotta re-connect the bracket for the overflow tank and make sure the wire permanently stays in that hole! thanks again for the help downey!
