Default synthetic oil

can someone please give me the rundown on synthetic oil. Can you change to it at any mileage? What is the rule on switching between synthetic and regular? one way and not the other? thanks.

you can switch anytime. mixing wont hurt anything, even though they sell flush kits so you can completely flush your engine of the old regualr oil and then add syn. but i dont think it matters. i made the switch at 50k miles from regualr to syn without flushing anything. i reccomend mobil 1 syn.

You can switch whenever you want. Just make sure the motor is as dry as it can be. When you switch it, its also good to do the next change within 500 miles or so to clean it out even more. But one thing, when you switch from syn. to reg. your rubber seals will leak like none other. Its because the syn. contains chemicals that will wick away from the rubber, where the reg. will soak into the rubber and through it easier after the syn has been in because they are soaked with the chemicals. Thats why motors should be broken in with regular IMO, becuase the valave seals will seal around the stem better when the oil soaks into the seals and thouroly penetrates it, cuasing it to form a tighter seal around the area.

It would probably be a good idea to switch from regular, to part synthetic, to full synthethic, just so the motor seals get "used to" the change. If not, then do what he said^^. Flush the motor out again SOON after the oil change so that the motor won't leak so badly.

I've switched numerous cars to synthetic, many with over 100,000 miles on them without a problem. For me to switch a car it has to be able to go at least 2000 miles on a quart of regular. I've never had one that was tight with reg have a problem with synthetic. I switched my EJ1 last spring to Mobil 1 after I had put 5K of reg on it to check it out. It had 80K on the clock. I've now gone 10K without adding a drop and expect to change the oil on Sat. I think I flushed the 1st car I switched and have never done it since.

My car has 244,000 miles on it. I am currently using regular oil. Right now my engine doesn't burn oil bad at all. Would synthetic benefit my engine more? By benefit, I mean make it last longer (I don't care about power right now, it's a D15B7) Would it be safe to switch to synthetic? If yes, what's the best way to make the switch?
Thanks.

Nope. But as an oil change specialist I would highly recommend Valvoline Maxlife in 10w30 like I run in my 250k+ mile Si.

LS's are slow.. I'm assuming you have an Si hatchback. Back then in my stock 93 EX Coupe (other than suspension mods), I would run 15.9, faster than a lot of LS's I've seen at the track.

But yeah, has anybody ever try the "German" Castrol Syntec 0w-30? From what I've read, it's a good synthetic oil. Supposedly when you start your car cold, it lubes your engine right away because it is thin. Then once it warms up.. it becomes like Mobil 1's synthetic 10w-30. I also heard it was better than Mobil 1.

Is that the Euro-blend that you are refering to? According to castrol it was designed for VW's with the VR6 and then some BMW's.

I switched from Dino oil at 30K and have not looked back... Mobil 1 5W-30 since, and now have 186,000 on the car...
