100mph in 3rd
Alright I have a 1992 Civic lx,A while back i got a new/used tranny and a Centerforce clutch.Couple nights back I was just crusin with some friend and i hit 100 mph in third gear, just barely pushing redline. It seemed wierd 100 in 3rd cause iv toped my car out before and it wouldn't push past 112/113.I was thinking though and that was before my new tranny. So could a diffrent tranny make my car faster in each gear.In the owners manual it says maximum speed in 3rd is 88.
Thanks
Thanks
it doesn't make your car faster. different transmissions have different gear ratios. most cx,dx,lx motors are going to have long ratios, thus why people talk about being able to go 70 mph in 2nd gear, etc.
I'm sure that my third goes well above 100mph, I currently have a vx tranny, and 5th is useless, 4th is almost like an overdrive. I'm only at about 3500 RPM doing close to 80mph in 3rd while passing, it bites. I'm hoping I can get my other tranny in this weekend.

I'll trade you. My Ex does that in 5th.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I wish mine would. I've got an old tranny that grinds in 3rd some, but it has way better gearing than the vx. My tranny will probably be up for sale soon, as I hate not being able to deliver any power, or accelerate very well. IMO, this tranny bites unless you are going for supreme gas mileage. I am getting about 36MPG an a D15B VTEC though, so that parts nice.

I never really understood the long gear vs short gear tranny thing. Are short gears better because the higher the gear the faster you gain speed? Example: someone in 2nd gear goin to 60 will take longer than someone who goes from 2nd to 3rd to get to 60?
The shorter the gearing (actually the higher the gearing) the amount of energy to move the car is lessened, the longer the gear is (smaller numerically) the more energy it takes to move the vehicle. Thats pretty much it, multipule diameters of gears transfer power, the larger the diameter the longer you can stay in the gear because its rotating at a rate that places more stress on your motor, therefore your rpms will not rise as quickly.

Also if you had a vehicle that had a torquey motor and was light like a b20 in a crx a longer gearbox would be benifical since a b20 in its stock form is not high reving.
However most hondas are very torqless, and require short gearing to build speed from the momentum built at higher rpms, while not placing a large load on the motor all at once.

yea thats about what mine did, although the tach on the dash is about 250 rpms higher than the real engine rpms, so we could really push it to like 93 or so mph

My Cr-v has like a final drive of 4.44 gearing is so short I feel like a hamster, since I have to shift so freakin fast since its a 126 hp motor pulling allong a 3200+ ib vehicle.

Top speed in your car will most likely be in 4th gear. Engine won't have enough power to go faster in 5th. When I was in college I used to test the top speed of every car I owned when I made anual trips to west Tx to visit an uncle. I remember one Fiat I had that could make it to about 110 (redline) in 4th and when I shifted to 5th it couldn't maintain the speed and slowly backed down.

I beg to differ. I think it'll top out at the telephone poll on the corner long before it hits 112mph. At least that's what I pray for at night.

I am sorry dude but that is just wrong. The longest geared 5 speed tranny
in the world will rev above 1500RPM doing 70. Think about it. Max speed
anyone should be going is 65. When trans is made in the factory in a 4cyl
like a honda the optimal gas milage will be closer to 2000-2500. The engineers
arent dumb. Your brain or tach is off.
Also, your engine (w/ manual trans) is lugging doing 1100rpm, you just dont
feel it at excessive speeds.

It's very annoying how so many people here act like they've never gone fast on a public road. Because every ******* one of us have done it at some point, if only once.

I will take a pic here soon. I **** you not, the tach states that it is just above idle, around 1100 RPM's, and it feels like it to. And ....

what do you mean by that?
