ok here's the deal.when i press my clutch in, there isn't any noise. whenever the cluth isnt in, there a rattling type sound. i went in to a spot and they told me i need a new tranny. another spot told me its either the throwout bearing or the input bearing and they charge me $275 just to look at it.
anybody else have this problem? any idea what else it may be?
**UPDATE**
ok we installed a new clutch set. the bearing was out but we thought it was better just to replace the clutch. after everything, i turned it on and it still makes noise, but it's not as loud.the same exact thing just a little lower.what else can it be?my buddy said the tranny looked good and there was nothing wrong with it

sounds like a throw out bearing to me. i went throw one of those in my mad tight 240 also i fucked up the main bearing. why dont you just take off the tranny, its not as hard as it may seem unless you dont have the tools then it sucks.

 

When you push in the clutch, you're taking load off of the mainshaft - more than likely your input shaft bearing is taking a dive (and/or the bearing at the opposite end of the shaft is too).

I had this happen to my 99 hatch tranny. The bearings totalled about ~$40 and with a second set of hands, I dropped the tranny, replaced the bearings, and re-installed in about 5 hours. These bearings aren't pressed in, or on, the shaft - so the majority of the headache is seperating the tranny halves and then getting them back together.

$275, while not steep, is more than the cost of a used D tranny (~$150, usually less) and that doesn't even include the 'fixing' part of it....so....if you can find a used one and can replace it yourself, I'd do that.

It's a lot of work to drop the tranny & replace anything out of it if it's a one man job. $ 150 seems reasonable IMO.

If he is removing/fixing/installing the tranny (with your help) - $150 is a 'friendly' price - I guess...

If you're bringing the tranny to him + you gotta pay for parts - $150 is the price you're just gonna have to pay...

Is it hard...nope...agitating is more like. If you're mechanically inclined + have a Helms + a 2nd set of hands, the job is not hard at all. I think it took all of 30 minutes to split the tranny, replace the bearings, reseal tranny and 25 of that was dickin' with the snap ring while seperating/joining the halves.

So yes, they have to open the tranny. They even have to remove the entire gear cluster. No, its not hard to seal it back up - make sure to use HondaBond though.

 

$150 isn't bad. You should also help/assist your friend, if you can, so that next time something like this happens, you can save yourself $150 by doing it yourself.

That snap ring was the single MOST difficult part of the entire process....

With a lift and 2 sets of knowledgable hands Mine and a buddy who owns a garage),Pulled the tranny, replaced my clutch, pressure plate TO bearing, input shaft bearing and back on the ground road ready in 3 hours...

And the only $$$ it cost me was the new parts.... and FOOD!!!

 

true its not as hard to take apart as everone makes it sound. i would save the money by doing it yourself.

i have the EXACT same problem... and its for sure the input shaft bearing.....

now only if i could find a place in teh OC to change it.... dammit....

 

sounds wierd but i thought that it was that on my sisters cx but turns out it was just the water pump bearing and yet me tell ou ive heard bothe bearing noises and they sound almost identical so becareful about going out and buying a new tranny if your not sure i would bring it to a honda dealership

isn't it the also called the pilot bearing? or am i wrong? if so where is the input shaft bearing?how much does it cost?

a friend of mine did it for $150.well we were going to chage to throwout bearing but just did the whole clutch.everywhere i went they were trying to charge $250 just to check it out.just for the labor

Up...for...what? You just said you had your friend do it for $150.

Are you saying that replacing the entire clutch with a new kit didn't solve your problems??

EDIT: I see you updated your thread at the top - Your ISB, and possibly the bearing at the opposite end of the mainshaft ARE going bad. Crack the tranny and replace'em or get a new/used tranny - it is only going to get worse - here, take a look:



This is the bearing at the opposite end from the ISB. This bearing, while NO ONE suggested that it could be bad, was is way worse shape than the ISB. Hell, the ISB spun quite freely, didn't have chips taken out the ball bearings, but did make some noise when spinning.

My bearing is goin out too!!! How much does it cost to get fixed...I got mine replaced last summer, but i didn't pay for it sooooo......

 

I had the same problem too, replaced the clutch, T/O bearing, ISB, and the bearing on the opposite end of the mainshaft, noise was still there. Check out this thread, very extensive write-up but he never found the problem.

Yea I actually had the same problem with my old transmission. (LSD B16 Hydro Trans) I could never figure out what it was. When I changed the transmission to the S80 ITR Trans, I was looking to see what might cause the noise. From what I learned, its the shift fork rattling. There is a cheap spring on the fork that holds it onto a ball in the center, with the fork on the throwout bearing and the other end on the slave cylinder. It seems that it doesnt actually hold tight against the slave, so the engine idle causes it to rattle. Just touch your clutch, dont actually depress it. Just give it enough of a touch to hold the fork tight, im willing to bet the noise goes away.

 

Best solution is to disassemble the tranny, spin all of the bearings on the mainshaft, and replace all of the ones that click or look like they aren't in the best shape.
