Default wastegate sizes: when do you need bigger??

there are many sizes available for external wastegates. how do you know which is the correct size for your setup? and why is it important?

is it a horsepower thing or something to so with the amount of boost you are running?

at what point do these sizes need upgrading:

35mm
38mm
40mm

Bigger turbo, more boost, you need a smaller wastegate. But most people like to run a larger gate just to be sure they don't get unwanted boost pressures.

See what wastegates are working well for people with setups similar to yours. There have been TONS of wastegate threads here, so there is no shortage of info. You just need to search for it.

You run too much boost, your engine goes ka-boom. You want to make sure the wastegate you run will maintain your desired boost level.

Not really either. It's more about flow. The more air your setup will be moving, the bigger the wg you need.

Getting a wastegate bigger than you need is a waste of money.

low boost = biggest valve you can afford
high boost = small valve

The more exhaust gas that needs to bypass the turbine inlet, the larger the bypass orifice needs to be, the inverse is true as well
