Default Check engine warning light comes on at 130kmph +

Everytime I hit 130kmph or just a bit over the check engine light comes on in my '91 Civic Si. The car does not feel any different at speeds of 130, 140, 150 or even over that so I'm not sure what's wrong. It has had alot of modifications done to it so I'm wondering if it may just be something simple that happens to all older Hondas or could it potentially be something much more serious.

I did blow the engine mounts already and the front end was swapped out for a Japanese one. In doing this the metal bar that fits inside the front bumper was cut away and so was the cross member underneath (sorry if I'm not using the correct terms yet but hopefully you have an idea of what I'm talking about).

I'm a little concerned that the end might be weak and flexing? I dunno, I'm too much of a noobie yet to really have any good ideas.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

One suggestion is to explain your speeds better. 130kmph = 130,000 mph That is unless you are trying to say kph, I see that you are from Canada. If your check engine light comes on when you go past that speed, just don't go past that speed. Unless you are some how getting up to those speeds on a track, you shouldn't be going that fast. Save yourself and everyone around you and slow down. I don't think you have anywhere THAT important to go.

the engine light comes on because it means "slow down, your going to kill someone! "...or maybe your engine is going to blow...?...I dunno

I'm Canadian and 130kmph = 130 kilometres per hour = not all that fast. My car should be able to do 130 without breaking a sweat. Heck, my '89 3 cylinder Sprint does 140 no problem.

JDM, thanks for the helpful reply

lol...I'm just playing....uuumm...one way to narrow your problem is do a self-diagnois check but if the check engine light only comes on at 130kmph then I don't know how you could pull that off...My guess is it could be code 6- coolant temp., or your speed sensor...does anything happen when it comes on?...anything weird?...any noises?.....

what?

the cops go 130km/h on the highways here. thats not fast at all. right now all the canadians reading this are laughing at you.

check the codes man <-- do a search if you dont know how.. once you get the code come on here again and tell us what it is.

also check the engine on the very back of the engine on the throttle body.. you might have smacked it when the engine mount went?

LOL my Canadian SiR does 230 KM/H (140 MPH) I have done that twice

I usually drive around 125 KM/H (75 MPH) on the highway.

Speed Limit on the Highways in Nova Scotia is 110 KM/H

You guys in Ontario up to that as well?

Engine coolant is at about 35% of max, and there is remains. Yes, the guage works fine in case you are wondering. I use 20W50 oil since it is only a summer vehicle.

This issue happened once I got the car and started driving over 130. The mounts did not go until about one full month later. Right now the car does not even turn over because of the mount issue. It's actually not as easy to get these mounts as I thought it would be. All the salvage yards I've been to have Hondas, but they are stripped to the frame. Not even a mount to be found, yet anyway.

No, we are not "UP" to that legally, although that never stops people from driving on the 401 like the autoban. The 407 is even worse, people drive so fast there that even doing 160 you still have a few idiots passing you

when I mention coolant...I didn't mean how much you have of it....just the temp....does the car act funny at all when the CEL comes on?...any noises or what not?

What I meant by 35% was that was how far the needle went up for the temp guage - so, still nice and cool. On another note, all fluids are always topped up or filled to spec. Want to keep my car running smoothly.

As far as noise or vibrations, notta. I have taken it up to 180 and it handles great. I don't like the idea of driving my car with a potential problem and ignoring it. My women does that and now our MX6 is ... well, hurting.

haha I'm a dumbass.......I dunno...I would figure out a way to do a self-diagnosis....that would really narrow it down....it could be like a fualty ECM......try reseting the ECU...pull the ECU fuse from the engine bay fuse box...wait like a couple secs...and then just throw it in...see if the CEL comes on again.......you could just take it to your local dealer and have them diagnosis for free....I think its free....but ya I would figure out a way to do a self-diagnostic....most deff

do the self diagnostic by jumping the blue connector that hangs near the ecu, once its jumped the CEL light will blink, long=10 short =1 so _ _ _ _____ = 13, even if the CEL light goes off correct me if im wrong but i belive they are stored in the ecu and u can still check them even if its not on nemore, just have the car in the ON position but not runnin when you check, get back to us w/ the code and we can help you alot more
