leaky valves
on my 88 crx si, the valves are leaking. i was told that instead of replacing the whole head i could get new valves. is this true? if so how hard is it to replace valves and how costly?

How did you test the valves? I need to test mine as well, I might have bent valves due to timing problems
did a shop do the test or you did?

Do a leak down test.

I have not tested them, my uncle did. The owner before me broke a timing belt doin like 90 and my valves are prolly bent too, and that is whats causing the leak, according to my uncle. thats why im wondering what my next move should be. a new head or replacing hte valves. im afraid to even start the car cuz i dont wanna FSU.
P.S i can only post 5 times in 24 hours which is bs but this is prolly the last post for me

hey just as a heads up...
when my CRX was running the timing belt broke when i was driving a co-worker home. It bent one valve is what the guy who did my timing belt said. He said i should rebuild the head and he'd only charge me $700 (i said no) He said i could drive on the bent valve for sometime with no worry. So i did, and after about 2 months on the way to work the valve head broke off. 3.5K rpms and a valve head bouncing around in the combustion chamber is bad for the engine.
Fix it soon. And valves are like $15 each somewhere i saw

valves = gone! if he broke the timing belt a 90 for sure! get get the head re-built you probly dont need a new head, unless it's been cracked or warped

so let me get this right, i dont need new seals or anything, even tho i will prolly get htem just to be sure. i just need new valves. i mean, the guy is my uncle, and i trust him not to kill me and to know what he's doing. i dont want to really buy a new head or to pay a shop to do anything (too gosh darn expensive). what would getting the head re-built entail? like what would they do at a shop to it? thx for all ur input guys

Buy mine wasn't at 90 mph it that what he meant, I was at very low rpm, like around 2 1/2 rpm and in 2nd gear if i remember correctly,or so when my timing gave out I heard some screeching sound than the car turned of by its self. Some people told me that you cant bend valves that easy, unless you are at high Rpm when the timing give out. Can someone back this up please?
You can rebuild your head. I would recommend sending it out to a machine shop. They need to inspect the valve guides to make sure they are not cracked. Also when you install new valves the seats have to be recut and replace the valve guide seals so you don't have a oil burner later.
alright well i got my car today, finally. im so happy. i got some parts off but i took pics before i started. it got too dark so i didnt get the head off, maybe tomorrow as i dont know what im doing. here is some pics of what i was talking about leaking oil. and Yes the cap is on tight. the car will idle but, if i give it gas, it sounds terrible like its runnin on 2 cyl.(which it prolly is) and then it dies
also, i seem to be stuck getting the bolt out on the very bottom of the heat shield... 12 seems to be slipping and 11 is too small and its so tight in there i can only get a regular wrench in. any suggestions? i think it may be stripped
what to do

edit: idk wtf its not showin up here but it does at crx forums. if you goto http://www.geocities.com/skadoesntsuk you can see them all

geocities sucks for hosting
I would take the head off and bring it to a resonable garage or dealer,
Valves its a little involved and you dont seem to be that Technical.
Need some special tools and lots of time.

yea thats the awesome part, my uncle was supposed to give me a head to replace this one, but his guy lost it, so the guy told my uncle if you bring me the head, ill only charge you parts and give you free labor.
using my limited knowledge, guessing, and just randomly taking everything off the car(it reallllly needs to be cleaned as there is oil coming out of just about every one of her orifaces) i am stuck on the intake manifold. there are 7 bolts , i got 6 off, 4 of them broke, 2 actually wanted to come off, and 1 i have no way of getting to. can someone enlighten me on how to get the center nut on the bottom side of the manifold off?
Totally clean it and find the leak. Could just be a leaky valve cover gasket, or cam seal. OR BOTH.
Also judging from your post, check your spark plugs and see if there is oil all over there. Start by pulling your spark plugs. The spark plug seals could have also gone with age.

well, there is def oil alll over the sparky plugs. when i pulled the dizzy out, there was oil all over that. when i took the aftermarket intake off, there was oil in the tubing and in the TB, so i bought some TB cleaner today when i got some rust remover. any ideas on the manifold problem? im stuck until i figure that out
That is normal.
Here is exactly what I would do RIGHT NOW.
1) clean your engine bay as clean as possible.
2) start the car and let it idle to see where it is leaking from
3) replace necessary and related gaskets.
I recommend:
Valve cover gasket
Cam Seal (distributer side)
Spark Plug Gaskets
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires

okay you guys are telling me different than my uncle, who sold me the car. he said it needs a new valve cuz when the timing belt blew, a piston hit valves and bent one and that is why the oil and **** is leaking. when i start the car, IFFFFF it even starts , its very bad idle, and if i give it gas, it vibrates like there is no combustion in one or more chambers, and often it dies. he told me the oil is comin out b/c the valve is bent. im getting varied replies on this so someone please straighten me out here. i got big plans for this car, as it is my project car not my beater.
With the supplied information it sounds like you have bent valves. If I were you, I would just swap another stock motor in there because you could have piston damage too.
Forget everything I just said before.

BTW if your looking for a ZC swap, http://www.hmotorsonline.com is a good place
because my uncle checked the motor and he said the pistons/walls and junk were fine, i dont want a new motor jsut a head
Editing because i cannot post more. Why would i get a new motor? i dont think thats necessary, i mean the only thing it needs is the valves and im going to purchase a new head anyway right?
