Default How to tell clutch type LSD?

I started thinking lately about something I noticed on my car since I got it. When I make tight low speed turns the inside tire kinda does this shudder thing. When I had crappy all season tires, they would chirp a little in tight low speed turns. I don't know if this is a characteristic of helical type LSDs, but I know on my old 240SX a tight upgraded clutch type LSD would cause the rear tires to chirp in low speed turns. I have a '98 Spec motor and tranny, and I guess it might have had a Spoon/Mugen/Kaaz/Cusco/etc. LSD installed. Does anyone else have the shudder? Thanks...

hmmm. I don't wanna have to go ripping apart my tranny to find out whats in there. I really should so I know what fluid to use. I'm using Pennzoil Synchromesh now. I suppose I would have to switch to KAAZ fluid or something if I had a clutch type.

jack up one side of the car and put the tranny in neutral.
you should not be able to turn the wheel in either direction (the one with a tire).

is this how to tell a clutch type, or an LSD period?

the clutch (and locker) type will have resistance all of the time (either direction).

torsen/ratchet type will have resistance only when power is applied to the differential.

You mean one of the front wheels still need to be in contact with the ground right?

well, I put in neutral, jacked it up on one side (and found out in the process that the alarm on my car also has a tilt sensor, w00t) and the wheel would only turn a few inches and lock in either direction. I guess I have an clutch type LSD. Now, what tranny fluid to use?

I use Redline MT-90. Basically, you want to use a fluid with a friction modifier, or you can use regular Honda MTF with a friction modifier additive (which Redline makes also).

when i bought my B18C swap it had a Kaaz LSD and that thing would chatter all day long in slow turns. I switched to a quaife...bye-bye chatter and i think for street use the quaife is better IMO.

I recommend Redline MTL and Ford Friction modifier.

If you search around, I've been saying this and have used it for years with great results until I finally sold my KAAZ unit.
