I did the same thing, but melted a piston. Some of the motor was ok, but I decided to start from scratch anyway. A bent valve could mean 500.00 or over 1k depending on what else may be messed up. Your looking at pulling the head, new valve job, new valves, ect. I've got some skunk2 valves and valve guides in classifieds right now. They are brand new, let me know if you need them. Pull the head and inspect the damage

I wonder if it has to do with mileage on the caR.. maybe, that either the trannys are getting harder to shift with age or the owners are just getting careless with age

Yeah, umm, I think you're on crack

I mis-shifted one time, in 1999 or so, 3rd at redline to 2nd. I can't remember what the tach read, but it was on the order of 9500-10000. Thank my lucky stars, nothing bad happened, I haven't ever pulled the head on my R and don't really want to anytime soon. The caR was 1 year old.

I haven't heard a price tag on new valves yet... hopefully not too bad!

Umm, are you sure it was only 8K?

the tach probably only indicated 8K of a much higher engine speed, it takes a little time for it to catch up with a zing like that...

Maybe it's just me, but these motors seem pretty fragile when it comes to things like this... heaven knows I've over-revved the hell out of the scooby (pegged the tach at 9+ in one instance) missing shifts at the track and never had a bent valve...

I guess the honda (or just the R) motors are run at tighter tolerances, or just more on the bleeding edge, eh?

Be interesting to hear you guy's side of teh story, and observations on the relative ease with whch it seems possible to screw up and lunch your motor...

In any case, good luck with the rebuild, we had to do the same to my friend's R over the winter, but i don't know what the total bill was.

I'm not sure how much it would cost you but now would be a nice time to go ahead and learn how to fix it. I know it maybe hard for you guys but I know if your in the military they can supply you with a hobby shop that will have all the tools you need to fix the problem.. But none the less I know everything works out for you.

I was gonna hazard a guess that your Subaru isn't an "interference" engine (i.e. no piston-to-valve contact when you float the valves) but I googled it and apparently all the DOHC scoobys are, so there goes my theory...

I once had too much windsheild washer fluid in my r and bent a valve.....it also caused a slight grind when i try to put the car in reverse while it is still moving

mine is single cam.. probably on to something there.

Still think it might also be a case of the honda motors being tuned too close to the edge... since they make all their power up high it is advantageous for the factory to rev them as high as possible...
