Default gauge range on 25 to 87 amp welder / cheap vs good / 914 Frame stiffening

What would be the range of gauge sheet metal this could weld?

I am restoring (well more like getting running and track prep) a 914 and while I am at it I will be stiffening the chassis a bit. The pieces I will be using are mostly around 16 gauge. I want the Hobart Handler 140 but I am poor (I have found it for ~450 shipped). I have a cheap high/low ~100 amp flux only welder now. Any suggestions on its usability? I have noticed it will blow through a lot of materials on high and won't give enough penetration on low - better than nothing I guess. I have used it on exhaust pipes and a vw seat frame with acceptable results. But I don't want to worry about the 914 busting welds while I am on the track. (Or blowing the welds on the intake )

This is some of the stuff I will be doing:
