Default Alpine CD changer not reading CD's

I think my laser might be calling it quits on my CHA-614 CD changer. It scans my discs but it doesn't play them. It occasionally reads them (every 2weeks ) but nothing consistent. Has anyone had this problem before? The changer is at least 5-6yrs old, so it might be the laser. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
