Lucky To Be In Japan Huh?
Nothing to important here but little fill in on all you jdm fans out there. I've noticed that you guys say we are all lucky to live in japan. Check out this. Today I have to pay road tax. All this leads to road tax. I have to get new JCI (Japanese Comprehensive Insurance) $253.80, Base Imspeciton (renew every time you get JCI) $28.50, Then Road Tax 17,000 yen (rough) thats about $150.00 bucks. So if you think we got it easy think again. Its not like in the states and pay registation/Saftey Inspection and you are on your marry little way. Just something to think about next time you say YOUR LUCK TO LIVE IN JAPAN!!!
So all in all, you spent a total of ~$437. Just curious though, is this a monthly thing, or is it a yearly thing? I may not pay that much a month, but I'll be damned if I don't pay that much to the state in both sales tax / income tax and insurance.
I work for Major Japanese company for 15yrs and all my coworker who came to do their 4 to 6 yrs term in US always cries when they return for good.
You get so spoil in American lifestyle and reality check hits you when you back to Japan. Life is tough back home in expensive little spaces. I don't mind hanging out for 2 weeks or so on business or pleasure but living there is another world.

Yep. I haven't seen one person who seemed happy to head back home.
The grass is always greener on the other side, yadda yadda yadda. Not.

In most of the states I've lived in, I've had to pay a yearly excise tax for my cars that was between $300 - $600.
Still sucks though...

The car taxes in Norway are worse than this and probably any other country.
A used ITR in decent shape costs around 35.000$ in Norway.
Thats almost TWICE as much as all the other european countries.
Our insurances are insane high, roadtaxes are crazy, and so is the gas-price.
1.5$ for one litre. And Norway is one of the biggest oil-counties in the world.
So i guess its fair for us in Norway to say You ARE lucky to live in Japan.

After reading that, I STILL want to live in Japan

It's just another tax... whether it's income, sales, or cigarettes, the government's going to get the same amount of money. How the overall tax rate compares in Japan, I'm not sure...
At least you have a decent public transportation system. Most of us don't have the option of NOT driving.

I can agree with most of the things you guys have to say. I get home sick most of the time, but heck half the time I'm looking at nothing but water! =-P But none the less, I didn't pay my road tax, wanna hear some more funny news. If your time expires for weight tax, they will turn around and impound your car (on a US military base) and you have to go threw all these things to get your car back on the road. Today I didn't pass my on-base inspection, failed due to 2 lights (license plates, and a small head light) and my steering cvc boots where torn... Yeah they get pretty hard up here, but the mech that did the inspection (which is japanese) took me to the auto hobby shop and helped me put them on (yeah I've never dont it before) man jn's kick ***, best peeps around. Props to all you JN's out there! But anyways he said he will pass me tomarrow so I'm hoping I will pass at the LTO. Wish me luck!

that is not a double negative.
I'd like to have cars that they have in Japan though. Not sure if living there is as fun.

believe it or not its not too bad. I live in a military base and theft is like 0. But I still don't wanna take that chance. I want to bring the jdm itr back buts its kinda expensive. I know a guy that will do it for 5 g's. But I have to reassemble the whole car. So thats the only downside. I know back at home the ITR is a high risk car. But over here almost everyone has a security type device on their car...
