Default newbie help on clutch/trans

Newbie question short on time............

96 civic ex 5sp

I need to get my transmission rebuilt as it grinds when going into 3rd anytime the rpm's get past 2000. The clutch is worn also (car has 134000 miles), and does not slip at this point, but I am told I might as well replace that at the same time. This car is not engine modded, and will not be.

I just found this site, and don't have the time to brouse for hours researching the many posts that surely exist here somewhere on the topic, as I need to make a decision tomorrow on wheather to have the work done by a transmission shop for about $1400 or try to do the transmission drop and clutch work myself, and just have the trans rebuilt for about $700.

I see there is a Excedy clutch kit and am also looking at a LUK brand kit. The Excedy kit is about $100 and so is the LUK for about the same price. The LUK has a performance gold model (30% stronger) for $215 (not sure I need a heavy duty model). I would do a new master/slave unit also. The whole kit/parts and do it myself would save about $350+ (enough for new tires).

I was hoping someone could sum up the clutch topics here and give me some bottom line advice.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

Go to this website buy all OEM for the parts that you need it will save you alot of $. Also get a helms manual at http://www.helminc.com it will be the most valuable thing to have if you are going to do it yourself. It is not to difficult to drop the tranny and a engine hoist helps alot.

My advice is dont let the problem go too long or youll be screwed. My car started grinding into reverse and 5th and I didnt know any better, and then one day a week later I couldnt get into reverse at all. The syncros were bad on the gears and needed replacing, so I had the entire transmission rebuilt so I could keep my LSD and have a reliable tranny. Just dont wait too long or youll get stuck someplace like I did.
