Stock LSD vs. Quaiffe LSD
I searched but couldnt find an answer to my question. I was wondering what is the advantage of an aftermarket lsd versus a stock lsd?
I have a ys1 tranny now (non-lsd), and I'm planning on boosting my car this winter. I hope to put out 300 hp, and plan on drag racing the car. I know I want traction bars and drag radials to help out with traction issues. But do I need a lsd?
I read that you can buy ys1 trannies with stock lsd's (an option in japan, i guess). But I'm wondering if there is an advantage to having an aftermarket unit like Quaiffe?
Thanks for the replies

Like it was mentioned, the Quaife is built to take the stresses of racing. Honda engineers never intended the diffs that they designed to take such abuse. Also, I would consider using slicks instead of drag radials.
Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering if the $900 pricetag for a Quaiffe lsd was worth it.

I would like to race on slicks, but the 1/8 mile track I race at is out in the country and the waterbox is setup for rwd cars only. I dont think a dry burnout on slicks would be good for my axles
Plus I've seen alot of good times posted by racers on drag radials.
*Edit*
I've got another question about axles. If I'm making 300 hp, and racing on dr's and traction bars, do you think my stock axles will hold up? Or do I need to upgrade? Thanks

You could try your luck with a $400 OBX LSD and see if it holds up to your power. How is the waterbox set up for RWD cars only? I would consider getting at least stage 1 Gator or DSS axles. From what I've seen at my track, more cars break axles using drag radials (esp. Nitto 555R's) than on slicks.

So do you think I need a lsd with my setup and power #'s?

Well you drive up through the staging lanes, through a fence, drive around the waterbox (which is right in front of the fence), then back into the waterbox (if you are rwd). Kinda sucks, but like I said, the track is out in the country and has been there forever.

Do you think the Stage 1 axles will be sufficient? Arent they only rated to like 225 hp?
I would use an LSD regardless of how much power I'm putting down. I only have about 155 hp to the wheels, but after putting in a Quaife, I've been able to get better and more consistent launches. That kinda sucks about your track. I guess you have to work with what you got. As for the axles, I didn't see your hp goal, so maybe stage 2 Gators will be appropriate for you.
How hard is it to install a Quaife diff?
So do you guys think I'll need a Quaife if I'm putting out 300 hp? I need to replace my Illuminas, plus I'll be using traction bars and drag radials. So I shouldn't have any traction problems

I believe XES broke his quafie lsd at the track.
He is pushing over 500 hp to the wheels

Yup I agree with Redline130... I'd use it no matter what... if you want to win at drag races you'll want LSD to insure consistent launches.
But since we're talkin about the Quaife, with 300hp that's a big recommendation
