Default Basic Questions About Driving a Manual Transmission Car

1.) Can the clutch pedal be fully released when reversing in a slow and normal manner? (ie. backing out of a parking spot)

2.) Other than 1st gear, is there any other time where I will press on the accelerator without fully releasing the clutch? (ie slipping the clutch in 1st to get the car going from a standstill)

3.) Is the proper technique for shifting into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th...
a.) Take foot off accelerator.
b.) Press clutch pedal completely in.
c.) Switch to desired gear (2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th)
d.) Let go of clutch pedal completely.
e.) Press on accelerator.
I ask this because I have a tendency to press on the accelerator just a tiny bit right before complete release of the clutch (especially in 2nd gear) to smoothen out the transition.

4.) There are two situations where I'm scared to completely let go of the clutch while pressing on the accelerator.
a.) On a street with an incline where there's a stop sign and you can only inch up little by little.
b.) On my driveway (which has an incline) when I'm slowly putting my car in the garage.
Am I the only one that does this?

This all comes in light of the recent replacement of my clutch, pressure plate, and t/o bearing. The tech said that it looked like I was doing 3k rpm launches and I was riding the clutch. I didn't think I rode the clutch since I put my foot on the dead pedal after every shift. I for sure didn't do any 3k rpm launches. So I'm trying to get to the bottom of my clutch failure.

Yes, it can be. But you kind of have to be careful if the car is cold because the engine is idling a little higher than at operating temp. I usually find that if the car is cold, and I'm reversing with clutch fully released, then I'm backing up a little faster than I'd like to.

2.) Other than 1st gear, is there any other time where I will press on the accelerator without fully releasing the clutch? (ie slipping the clutch in 1st to get the car going from a standstill)

I can't think of any instances where you would need to do this.

I do the same thing! If I'm shifting at the recommended shift points, I find that giving a little gas as you're releasing the clutch helps smooth out the transition. If done properly, you'll actually save wear on the clutch because you are literally rev matching and compensating for the falloff of RPMs that occur the instant you engage the clutch to shift. Now if I'm driving a little more aggressively, I don't have to use this technique at all.

4.) There are two situations where I'm scared to completely let go of the clutch while pressing on the accelerator.

b.) On my driveway (which has an incline) when I'm slowly putting my car in the garage.

Neither one of these are very "clutch-friendly." I always try to ride the clutch as little as possible. But if full release of the clutch means that I'm going to lurch forward and hit the rear of the car in front of me, or the wall in the garage, then ride it I will. The trick here is not to raise the RPMs more than they need to be. If slipping the clutch at 2500 RPM will get you up the hill nice and easy to the STOP sign, then don't rev to 4000 RPM while slipping the clutch in the same scenario (hope that made sense).

I'm not great with a manual transmission, but I make do I guess.

Shifting technique for me:
1. Gas release a bit, not all the way
2. Clutch in, gas out all the way
3. Shift into desired gear
4. Release clutch pedal right before contact point
5. Gas a little and at the same time matching it with clutch releasing.
6. Continue to gas and left foot fully off the clutch now.

That's what I do, works the best and the smoothest

lezsee... launch method.. Pedal to floor and as the tack needle swings

past 6k slide my foot sideways off the clutch... ( make sure traffic is clear )

Shifting in anger... I've never been a fan of power shifting ( no clutch )

but I do use about a half clutch stroke between shifts... This is for straight line

stuff only... when I have to control the car's direction and attitude, I rev match

on down shifts ( heel and toe ) and use full clutch with progressive throttle for

up shifts... This is a much faster shift than it sounds...

Oh and only kidding about the side stepping the clutch... I actually like this car..
