Default Spoon Throttle Body (a little technical)

Sorry for the repeat, but I need a little clarification.

From the previous tread on this topic (https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=53133)" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow external">http://<a href="https://honda-tech.c...?id=53133</a>) the only thing I learned is that the Spoon Trottle Body tapers from 70.1mm to 64mm and that no match porting is necessary.

My question is how does the Spoon throttle body overcome the volumetric efficiency issue of having a 70mm inlet. Is the B18C5 capable of moving enough CFM to warrant the 70mm opening without compromising air velocity at any point in the RPM range?

I’m considering buying one, because I have a buyer for mine, and want to know if it would be worth the $200 dif.

Don’t get me wrong I’m sure the Spoon people are infinitely more intelligent than me. I’m just looking for knowledge. And does anyone have any numbers?…

Thanks.

tapers from 70-62.

Not really worth the money unless you just want to spend the money.

.....if you really want a bigger tbody, check out the erick's racing ~70mm (I think).

But I'm not sure what good it will do you without port matching the IM and maybe the head too...

I think the main purpose for the design of the Spoon TB is to increase the intake air velocity, and hope to get better throttle response and low-mid range. I don't think you will see any peak hps gain with the Spoon TB.

Also, you can just bore your stock ITR TB to Spoon spec.

Dyno tested on heavily modded B18C5 w/ Spec A cams, Mugen header, etc..

Zero HP
Zero TQ

Identical graphs. A/F ratios were the same.

More gain was seen by advancing the timing two degrees. Seriously.

bbk makes 70mm ones for around 300. sounds better to me!

We have dyno a Spoon TB and they make 5whp at the mid-range and 2whp at the peak.

I find that kind of hard to believe.. but then again if the motor was fairly stock, it might work.

This motor we were on the dyno with was already 187/137 at the wheels. Not close to stock.

We have experienced no gains on an ITR with bolt ons. I do suggest this mod for those with a B16 and ITR Intake Manifold. Has anyone running cams (needing more airflow) tried this TB out? I understand the concept of a velocity stack, but if the stock IM then becomes the bottleneck, of course there will be no gains. Wonder how this would work on an IM that was Extrude Honed...? Questions, questions...

Ben would it be possible to bore out/taper the Spoon Throttle Body? or is it based on the Stock t.b and has already reached its limits

I have heard of gains on stock b16's, consistent with this statement.

My question: on a modded NA motor, will a bigger tb generate gains where (if anywhere)? This is for a stock intake manifold and head, but with cams let's say...

Never tried a Spoon throttle body on an Extrude Hone'd intake manifold.. but I can do it next time we dyno.

A friend has JUN3 cams in a B18C5.. just added an Extrude Hone intake manifold. He's gonna be switching to a sleeved B17A bottom end (84.5mm bore) real soon. It'll be a high revving, awesome R/S ratio(can you say HIGH END TORQUE?), so we'll see what it does.

I will try to get my dyno graphs, I had about a 2-3hp gain when I switched out my stock TB for the Spoon TB, This was on my car.

70mm-62mm is way good enough for a NA setup but if you go T/C then bigger is better.

You cannot bore the Spoon TB anymore or maybe straight bore is possible.

Raging Angel has the dyno plot for it.

The setup was : AJR (Spoon) TB + Spoon aircleaner (drilled holes at the bottom of the box)
