89-91 are the same..
The only difference between the 89 and 90-91 is the clutch disk was smaller
88 is different

no not all are alike ... the only difference in a SI tranny are the 88 model... i think it has 20 splines... rather than the 89-90 21 splines...

Yes you can use the 89 tranny in a 90-91. The 89 setup used a smaller clutch but the spline count si the same as 90-91 so you can just use the 90-91 clutch.

close, it's 21 splines on the '88 and only 20 on the others

If you want to use a 88 tranny with a 89-91 clutch/fly, you need a 89 prelude disk (same dia as 89-91 clutch, but with the correct spline count)

It's been a long time though, can any one back me on this? I forget exactly which year prelude crosses over, ACT told me years ago...

splines are the number of teeth marks on the tranny .

I know the 88 Accord or 87 Prelude clutch discs work. Im not sure if the 89 Prelude is the same.

good info. so it would be wise to use a 90-91 clutch disk on an 89 ?? since the disk is larger?? better upgrade if you are gonna get a new one anyway? right? I have a d series tranny and dont know what year it is, so i will gamble with a 90-91 clutch setup. Hope its not an 88...

IIRC the 90-91 have a 35mm bearing and 88-89 have a 40 mm bearing...it makes a difference if you want to go with a LSD...

88-89 civic/crx si models and 90-91 ex 4dr's have the 40mm bearing. only the 90-91 civic/crx si models have the 35mm bearing. just wanted to let you guys know.

Apparently this is actually untrue. Quaife sells LSDs labelled that way, but Mista Bone has taken a bunch apart and says that the 90-91 Sis all had the same 40mm bearing as the 88-89 and 92+.

And yes, you would need the 90+ flywheel (212mm).

i thought the 92-95 clutch disc was a little larger,
but sometimes when i think my brain hurts

88 and 89-91 are the big differences, on input shaft. 88-89 and 90-91 are internal differences (bearing size differences.)
