Bike studdered on quick throttle imput, thoughts?
Bike details: 2001 R6, carb'd (for those that dont know), Micron slipon, stock otherwise w/no jetting, 10k miles, full oil, 1/2 tank gas.
I was merging onto the freeway today, bike was warm for about 10 minutes previous to that, and as I jumped on the throttle, the bike made a studdering noise and had a slight jerk to the acceleration, then about 1-2 seconds later caught back to normal and I took off. Any thoughts? Clogged jets? I'm a newbie to bike maintenence, but not to car maint. so fuel filter and spark plugs come to mind first.
Just looking for a little advise.
TIA

sometimes when you mess with the exhaust and dont jet the carbs, it can run little funny.
i've been in similiar situations before, but for me it was just b/c i had a bad tank of gas (went to crappy station one time cause i was low and in middle of nowhere)

My 650 Yamaha with 4 carbs studdered when I would crack to full throttle b/c the carburator banks weren't sync'd right.
I don't know if the carb'd R6's still use vacuum operated slides, but this was the cause of my studdering.

Was this a one time only thing, or does it do it all the time? You need to pinpoint exactly what conditions the problem is happening then work from there. Being able to recreate the problem is step #1.
If it were just that once, it could be fuel related. Something clogged the filter, bad bit o' gas.
If it does it all the time it's probably carb related. At 10k are you close to your 1st valve adjustment? I think it's 12K, but check. Could also be as simple as plugs so give those a check too. Start with the simple things and work your way up.

Yea I'm pulling my plugs tonight to see if they are looking fouled.
The problem only happened once, and I tried recreating it about a dozen times by just punching the throttle...hasn't happened again since.
Thanks for the replies fellas.

funny, my bike did that before. Maybe like once or twice on the first day i bought it. It hasn't done it ever since. There wasn't really that much of a loss in acelleration (just slightly) but it was sputtering. Had a friend ride it, he really got on it and it was sputtering too.
Hasn't done it ever since. Was thinking maybe it was a bad tank of gas cause of the cheapo dealership.
Then again i have a gixxer thats fuel injected.

If it happened once I would then doubt my earlier theory. It does sound like like some bad gas, some dirt from the air filter, or something else caused it to studder.
As long as there were no sharp backfires, I would just continue through your normal riding routine and maintainance schedules, using what you know to be quality products,
Good luck.

sounds like a carb issue. Most likely it needs to be jetted and tuned since the bike is already running lean from the factory
