Default If you had 5 grand...

Experts, audiophiles, n00bs, whatever:

If you had $5000 to spend only for your car audio system, how would you spend it? On what brands, what components, amps, etc but $5000 is the cap. Especially interested in what the mods and honda-tech pros have to say.

I think I would put an in-dash 7'' LCD with cd/dvd, a couple of LCDs on the headrest, one in the rearview mirror, then buy a good comp. system, subs, and amps to run everything. Brand wise, I dont really know, everyone here obides by JL Audio (such as yourself from what I have seen), but I would really do my research or take it to a high end auto audio shop.

Hopefully thats enough money to do all that

I have a 2 door so I would only put TVs in the front cuz my backseat is not worthy of being a backseat. Maybe where the passenger side airbag is?? It's great to fantasize though, cuz I can't see myself doing that before an engine swap with the money.

hmm....5 grand...

speakers:

active setup with the Image dynamics crossovers.
Dynaudio drivers up front, MW 190 in the doors, 5 1/4" driver and 3" soft dome tweeter, both in custom fiberglass kick panels.

amps
Brax X2000.2 graphic edition for the subs
Brax X2400.2 graphic edition for the mid and tweets

1000 for misc cables/ install stuff (wood/glass)

not sure on the HU (especially since i spent the budget already pretty much.

on second thought, maybe scrap the active setup and go with the system 360 3 way component set and a a 15" or 18" sub in the trunk.

there would be no tvs and no neon lights in my setup. i mean c'mon...im driving...why do i need a tv

You had better get two IDQ31's (or more) if you want them for a stereo setup

and who needs em with the built in processing on the 9255

Good choice! I'm surprised only one mentioned a security system and included prices for additional accessories (smartwindows). Can't believe I didn't think of that!

i wouldnt dump 5k into a stereo system, thats just more reason for people to jack your car..

i'd dump like 1000 or 1500 into her, and use the rest for performance

but hey, look at it this way..

when we're at the strip, and the light turn's green, i take off going down the line ripping through the gears hearing my turbo spooling up, you'll be at the starting line still.. not bored tho, cuz you have your 5k stereo system..

and when we're driving on the hwy and your can is noisy as ****, cant hear the radio, rattles etc, i'll be in mine cruising along smooth quiet and comfortable i dont see the point in making your only car a track car.

people would steal the car for the electronics but not the performance parts? that doesnt seem true to me.

as far as security goes...if someone wants to steal my car with a 5K system , go ahead...i have insurance. i'm not going to inconvenience myself with 900 kill switches and ignition cutouts so someone can vandalise the car when it wont start.

Or you just start with the right car and you can have both - a competent track car and a killer sq system....just takes some creativity!

exactly. i got a system in my car that is pretty damn loud, and its not "huge" like alot of people are makin them..

as you can see from my sig. spent max about 1500 including deck and professional installation of everything (only cuz it comes free when you buy parts from circuit city, best buy, audio express, paradise village, etc etc..)

yes but in doing that you are going to sacrafice something. all the electronics add weigh and so does the sound deadening. so for going SQ you're really adding weight and for making a track car you would really want to reduce the weight.

Well, there's an easy way to combat that....I don't have to add any sound deadening to my M3 - it already is quiet enough...thank you to the guys in Munich for that one. The box and amp rack will be removable for track days.

No matter what you do, you will compromise....the question is how can you find a happy medium. I think it's pretty easy to do with the car I have now. From the factory it's ready for the track - add some coilovers and larger wheels and you are really ready to have some fun - only the factory H/K "premium" system is a joke - and a pretty easy fix to an otherwise well rounded car!

oh, and sorry for getting this so far off topic....

dont get me wrong...i'm not doubting the M3 as a track car even stock but you also have to admit that your car is not in the same leage as civics and integras. what was the price tag again

as far as compromise and a happy medium, what about 2 cars?? i mean if its a track car, you dont really need any insurance on the car. you dont have the limitations as far as safety and emmissions. get your daily driver, and whats an extra 3G's to totally eliminate any element of restrictions. maybe its just me but when i go out with friends in their cars with mods as simple as a catback exhaust and new springs and shocks i find the ride to be very annoying. its loud and not comfortable.

Hmmm, my M3 or my old Civic Si......what was the question again?!?! I'll keep the bavarian for my track work...but an E36 would be better still.

You bring up a good point. I already have two cars - and it's a pain in the ***. One is my show car (classic american iron), the other is the M3. Maintaining two cars, driving two cars, etc is a bitch. You know what the biggest problem is - STORING two cars - especially in this area of the world.

If you have a daily driver and a track car with no insurance - guess what, now you need a third car (truck actually) + trailer to get it to the track. And where are we finding track worthy cars for 3k again?

My car handles like it's on rails, is relatively comfortable (even my grandma doesn't mind riding in it - gotta love adjustable coilovers), and is quiet - even with exhaust. It's the jack of all trades - it does everythign better then 90% of cars on the road - and when I'm done it will sound better then 90+% too

Then again, I don't have any desire to go to the track every day/weekend, but it would be fun to auto-x everyonce in a while or hit Laguna Seca or Infinion Raceway (both less then 2 hr from my house) for BMWCCA track events.

If I was serious about tracking a car, I'd go buy a 95-99 M3 and let it rip....

Wish I had some money for an M3. Then again, I'd get an IS300 with that money, maintaining a bimmer is costly from what I hear.

track car for 3K... hmm..

old 240SX
CRX
EG hatch.

granted with those cars you'd have to dump some money into each of them but isnt that part of modding the car?

for the lower end hondas i jsut dont see the point in trying to build up a high performance car that will retain comfort, drivability and have an excellent stereo. you're not dealing with something thats got great out of the box performance or a big engine. basically every mod you do whether its for performance or a stereo, will be couterproductive for the other.
