Default h22 retarding at 5k...help

Hey all, my friend has a 95 vtec lude, and for some reason his engine retards at 5k rpms, it acts as if you had hit the rev limiter. It won't go past 5k. He's brought it to the honda shops and all, but they have no clue what's wrong. Anyone have a clue why?? I think it'd be the ecu cutting fuel at 5k, or maybe the vtec engagement mechanism isn't working right. I suggested he get a new head and see if it'll fix the vtec engagement, if it doesnt fix, then it's gotta be an ecu problem.
and, the ecu doesnt even throw any codes at all...says nothing's wrong.

i'd swap ecu's with a known good one before switching the head. is the check engine light on? if it is, clear it and try again.

i have an 0BD2 ecu laying around. don't know if that'll help since you're probably ODB1.

If it is retarding your timing at 5k, I am inclined to think the knock sensor is pulling timing.

I would try cleaning out the vtec selenoid, replacing the spark plugs with proper gap, and also check the distributor/rotor/cap/ignitor.

Thanks for your input, I was also thinking the knock sensor, but I dont understand why the knock sensor would go off when the compression is all good across the 4 cyl's...dunno how the hell it's gonna knock with 93 octane...but anyways, maybe, could be...i dunno

Just shoot some tuner cleaner on the selenoid? Honda has checked over the engine thoroughly 3 times...never came up with any reason why. I dont know.
