Tranny noise - HELP!!!
Hi!
I am having problems with tranny humming... the car is 1996 Civic coupe D16Y7 bone-stock with 90.000 miles on it...
Did anyone ever have a problem with wrong tranny fluid (too thin or too thick)???
If yes, is there any acompanying noise that goes with wrong choice of tranny fluid?
For example, I have this constant humming noise when I drive (it is very similar to TIRE RUBBING SOUND but it is not it - it is a bit deeper and constant)... It doesn't make the difference if the engine is turned on or off, and it doesn't matter if the car is in gear or neutral...
Immediately when wheels start moving, the humming noise starts... so if I just let my car cruise at neutral and turn off the engine, the sound is still there so I doubt there is something wrong with mainshaft or countershaft)
I already replaced wheel bearings (both left and right - Koyo) and differential bearings (NTN)... the sound is still there - NO CHANGE
That made me think... this sound started when I first changed the tranny fluid when I got the car...
Instead of Honda MTF or GM Syncromesh FM I put in SHELL 10w40 semi synthetic...
I cannot find Honda MTF or GM fluid here where I live so I was forced to use engine oil...
Now my question is... would the oil that is TOO THIN cause tranny-humming...
Cos guys at Honda dealership said that 10w40 oil is TOO THIN for the tranny and that I should use ONLY 15w40 or higher (20w and so on) in our climate/temperatures...
Is that true?
They also said they DO NOT KNOW where this sound is coming from...
And if I am right noises can come from: (note that sound is there also when car is off and in neutral)
- tires - NO
- tire rubbing - NO
- wheel bearings - CHANGED
- CV joints - CHECKED
- tranny shafts - CHECKED
- differential - CHANGED BEARINGS
- ??????????????????????
Is that it or there is something else that should be on that list????????
Help me cos I am stuck!!!
Off topic:
I was planning to replace the whole tranny for EX tranny but the guy wanted to rip me off and sell me the wrong tranny... thank God for H-T-ers and their knowledge on tranny and part codes
I found 2 more EX tranny but they both have f*cked up 2nd gear syncro... another words, there is NO good EX tranny out there to find
HELP GUYS, YOU ARE MY ONLY CHANCE!!!!!!

I CAN'T
They don't carry it!!! ********* told me that they do NOT order Honda MTF cos the engine oil is THE EXACT SAME as Honda MTF and that they don't see any perspective in putting MTF...
If I want to change the fluid there they will just put some Castrol 10w40 Magnatec in it...
It seams that they have some exclusive contract with local Castrol supplier... IDIOTS!!!
They should sell HONDA PARTS and not some AFTERMARKET SHUBIDUBI STUFF

Are you serious???
Cos it doesn't sound like something is VERY WRONG... but it is noticable and annoying...
Like I mentioned before, this sound is very very similar to TIRE RUBBING SOUND... it is a bit deeper, not as loud as tire rubbing and it is CONSTANT...
If tire rubs like HU_HU_HU_HU_HU ... this sound is like HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Thank you
But I do not have a credit card to pay over internet and I live in Europe so that narrows my options...
I asked my friend who lives in Germany and he also said that German dealers put engine oil and DO NOT have Honda MTF... It is like the TWILIGHT ZONE . tu du du du ... tu du du du

Bummer.
So internet ordering is out. Do you have any local race shops that you can visit? Talk to them about gear oils and see where they get it or if they have it in stock or not?

Well I've been in most of them but none of them even heard about GM syncromesh FM...
And Honda MTF is only a Honda "thing" and can be only ordered from Honda (here were I live)...
I'm stuck...
I will just try to put in some 15w40 mineral oil and see what happens and then, if I am not succesful, I will see other options...
Any suggestions? Besides tranny fluid?
