HELP! MY ACCORD STINKS!
Ok here is the problem:
When i turn the A/C on it has a strange smell and when I put the aircontrol onto the setting where the air flows freely into the car it smells even more. This car was given to me and i think it might have been sitting for awhile, and i also think it went through the San Diego Fires. Is it possible that maybe the ashes or whatever caused the car smell this way? Anyways, i need some help so i can figure out how to fix this. Does airvents have some type of air filter? Any help would be great thanks!

if the car had been sitting for a while i would recommend taking your evaporator out and cleaning it off with some compressed air. mold tends to collect on the evaporator. its under your passenger side dash behind the glovebox.
Best bet is to find out where the intake vents are for the fan, and spray lysol while it's on high. Keep on spraying liberally and the lysol should eventually coat all the areas where the bacteria/mold are breeding.

Hey laugh if you want, but some people have done it and said it worked really well. I guess windex would work too since it has ammonia in it. If you REALLY wanted to, you could use bleach as well... lol
up your nose....hehe ummm im guessing where the ac filter is or the vents???? my guess is the ac filter mostlikely.
but get a 2nd b4 u go and f' up your car

Just change the filter in A/C someone already said. If you are lazy just take to a dealer and have them do it. My friend's accord smelled like a melted red crayon for awhile, but the A/C was just dirty.

I fixed the smell in my car by taking out the blower motor, taking the fan off (one nut) and cleaning it with some hot water with dish soap and a little bleach.
Then I wiped the evaporator box down with windex.
At the time I thought I had a bad evaporator and it was already out, so I rinsed it with water and let it sit in the sun for a day.
That cured the smell coming from my AC

the lysol trick works the toyota dealers do that to their cars when they get complaints of smelly Ac ..... and there is a simple explanation the mold will grow in your ac vents and lysol kills mold so that takes care of your problem....
also bleach works too so i am glad you sloved your problem

Ehhh....saw this advice....and tried it
I have a 94 accord ex four door...it had a nasty sweaty sock smell coming out of the air vents when turned on to circulate air or defog windows.....
I sprayed lysol into every vent, and then sprayed it while recirculating air inside the car...then sprayed it into the vent under the engine hood while drawing air from outside...sprayed a few times over 20 minutes while having the vent system on full blast (4) with heat turned all the way up
now instead of smelling the dirty sock smell....I have an all new lysol/rotten fruit smell....the **** wants to choke me
so I took a nice long ride tonight with the windows down/moonroof open and heat on full blast.....still smell a lysol tainted weird odor...and I think the inside of my nostrils are burnt
My A/C doesn't work, and I was told it's the compressor or condensor...something like that.
If I change the condensor, and clean out the parts mentioned above....should that do it...or do I have the car from that seinfeld episode
What really sucks is that the car is great except for that smell....I have a really sensitive sense of smell, so if I can't get rid of it...I'll have to sell the car
Oh..I also heard of blasting the car with ozone from an ozone machine at a detailer's shop...he wants $50 to blast it with ozone for 5 hours.
I did some research on a .gov site regarding ozone as a odor treatment...it said that ozone in high doses can can alter the chemical makeup of bacteria turning it into something else thereby eliminating the odor...but not neccesarily killing the bacteria permanately...so the smell could return.

I couldn't help but laugh at your description Rob. haha Anyways, it's the condensor you need to replace, not the compressor. I recharged the AC with dye to test the AC and there's definitely a leak in the condensor.

looks like I'll be fixing my A/C in December....sort of like Christmas in July reversed
