how to get cam gears off
i have a set of aem cam gears and i want to put them on my car i was wonder if anybody had a suggestions cuz i dont want to start and mess something up with the cam timing
If you've never dicked with timing and cam gears before, you might want to let someone else install your new gears.
It really isn't too difficult, but get a Helms or Haynes manual and it can walk you through it... Basically, it goes like this:
1. You just take the valve cover off
2. Slip timing belt off
3. Jam something like a screwdriver through a cam gear and wedge it against the head (so the gear can't turn)
4. Remove the bolt holding the gear on.
5. Repeat with the other gear
6. Tap the gears off with a rubber mallet or the bottom of your ratchet. Grab the little keys (tiny metal bit) that comes off with the gear (or it may stick to the camshaft).
7. Slip the new gears on, aligning with the keys, and tighten the bolts (use that screwdriver again)
8. Align the two lines on the cam gears so they are pointing directly at each other (even a little bit of skew can throw off your timing) and slip the timing belt back on. You may have to dick with the tensioner underneith the driver's engine mount (look at a manual for this) to get the belt back on. Set cam gears to 0, 0.
9. Dab RTV on the corners of cam caps 1 and 6 on both exhaust and intakes sides, push valve cover gasket into valve cover, and reinstall valve cover. Torque all nuts to spec (I think its 96 in. lbs a piece). Then again, if you want to tune the cam gears, do it before this step. Whatever.
That's the jist of it.
