heated seats
Anybody ever installed heated seats in their car? It's friggin COLD up here in the winter, and I'm a huge sissy when it comes to being cold. I think this year I'm finally gonna drop the $100 for a seat heater. My dad gets them in every car he ever buys, and they really are a nice thing to have. (not the greatest of necessities, but possibly the greatest of luxuries!)
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the diy version.

The ones I'm looking at are a universal carbon fiber type that you can cut to whatever size and shape you want to make it fit your seat. They go right under your stock fabric and connect to a 12 volt source with a simple two-wire hookup. They're on eBay for around $100 a seat, plus shipping, but I haven't been able to find them anywhere else on the web for less than $130-150. Expensive, yes...but I'll more than forgive myself when it's 10 degrees and 3 feet of snow outside!
Just don't confuse them with the ones that use a wire heating element. The metal wire ones get warmer, but you can't cut them to fit your seat, and I read somewhere about moisture problems being associated with them. Not so with the CF ones.

from the very little bit that I've really looked into it, it seems that most oem seat heaters are the metal wire type, so you might not be able to modify one to fit. I'll be the first to tell you I'm no expert though!
as for the after market seat warmers sounds like a good idea.
pulling one out of any vehicle would be simple enough to install if you can rip your seat apart and can handle a power ground and a switch.
at the good ol chrysler dealership i work at i replace the heating elements in at least 100 seats per winter. they get a hot spot in them and actually melt some of the seat pading when they go bad... im waiting for the day that one actually catches fire.
a carbon fiber one would seam better .
but i was looking though a honda crx manual i found online here and it shows heated seats in a crx seat. in the KS model.. whatever one that is.. maybe a jdm or edm aplication. i would beinterested in finding aset of seats like that or atleast finding the origin of them at the least.
any inlightenment on that would be apreciated.
buy yea eric if you find out that those ebay ones are good let me know ill use a set myself.

dlszrfn, I actually bought one of those same ones in a different auction. I was pissed when I clicked on that link, because I thought he was selling both heaters for $80! but then he said near the bottom that each seat is separate. I paid $90 for mine, which was the cheapest I found at the time. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
Well, I bought one, and it's for sale already.
It actually looks awesome, but I found a great deal on a tranny and I now need the money! I really wish I didn't have to sell it!
Never installed.

I did hear that, and I *think* it was only offered in scandanavia. I imagine it would have likely been the metal wire type. Those kind are notorious for developing hot spots and burning up the heater as well as the seat. Not to mention, they're not entirely water proof. And like you said, I have never even heard of anyone who has even seen one! LOL
This really is a sweet set up. I'll be sad to get rid of it.
