What happened to my tires? (Pics inside)
This is my front side (passenger) wheel/tire. You can see the terrible wear on the inside edges. I have some ideas of what is going on, but I'd like to hear what you honda-tech thinks about it.
Sorry of the pictures are large, it shows the detail more. I resized them down from 1600x1200.

what's your tire pressure at? Also, when's the last time you got an alignment and how old are your shocks?
I should mention that the tires are 195/50/15 Toyo T1-S.
I just checked and the tire pressure is 31psi. I've used this pressure for the past 2 years without any problems. However a couple of weeks ago, I did experiment and put in 33-34psi on the fronts.
Over a year ago was the last time I've had an alignment done.
Koni Yellow shocks are 1yr old. Would an uneven rebound setting on the front driver/passenger affect tire wear?

my ex had the same problem with hers. what the problem was was that the tire was a lil too wide and he side of the tire was being scraped away by the upper A-arm. maybe you're a lil too low. what kinda camber kit fo you have? the ones that adjust the ball joint? so check it out.
Prety much anything will cause a tire wear, me being 300lbs and driving alot in my integra makes the drivers side wear, get a alighnment from a good shop and they will let you know everything that is wrong and fix it.
I'm running H&R Sports springs. The car has -1.75 drop on the fronts. I'll have to see if the A-Arm is shiny from rubbing. I do not have a camber kit. I also sofened the front koni's yesterday, and maybe it's rubs now?
I figure it was a bad alignment. Does bad toe setting cause this kind of tire wear?

i have h&r sport + kyb agx.... i also have the skunk 2 camber kit for the front.... the camber kit is maxed out on one side which is what 4 degrees of camber? it's still a bit out of spec... so it might be that you have bad camber wear? every car's different.

I don't think camber would do that, it would wear more on towards the middle and not one thin line. As well, it happened recently and very quickly, as I took my wheels/tire off at no more than 500miles ago, and that wear wasn't there.
I'm really starting to think it's rubbing against something. That whole area is smooth and parts of it look melted. I firmed up the front shocks and switched to different wheels and tires, see if it does the same.

If you're askinga bout the middle wear, it's from overinflation. Underinflation eats up your sides. 31 sounds normal though. *shrug*
The side groove is from fender rub from the lowering.

No, this whole thread is about the side groove.

Oh ok.
Yeah it seems like it.
The car would sag and be lower if I set the front shocks to softer, thus causing it to rub?

well i'm assuming... camber =
/_/ \_\ causing the top side of the tire to rub... i had that on my prelude a while back when i had no camber kit... it was rubbing against something.... i think it might have been a nub on the a-arm so i filed that down and it was better.

how low is it? those aren't super-wide tires, so it's gotta be pretty slammed to rub on something. unnless you have some odd wheels on there with not enough backspacing. I had a similar problem on my 'Stang: the tires were too wide for the backspacing on the wheels so I got a nice groove on the sidewall from the upper control arm.
The H&R Sports are 276lb/inch spring rates. I have about 1-2 finger gap with the wheels on. It's not terribly low at all, and camber is only -1.75. I think with the Koni's on softer settings, the H&R's sag too much.

Get an alignment, I guarantee the toe is out-of-spec, which is probably causing the wear you see. It looks like in the pics that the edges of the tread blocks are wearing down, aka feathering.
The shock damping level won't change whether you rub anything or not. Koni shocks only adjust the rebound damping anyway, not the compression damping.
I had the same springs and 205/50 tires on stock wheels and have never rubbed anywhere ever. Now I'm on GC's, lower than before, with 195/50's on stock wheels and still no rubbing at all. If you're rubbing, you probably have bent suspension parts.
*edit* the shock damping setting will also not affect how low the car is. When I had my H&R Sports I was sitting at -2.5 camber in front, but still no rubbing problems.

Yup, I'll get an alignment done anyways, to see what is happening.
The tires are feathering because I auto-x'ed on them on concrete.

That happened to me with my toyo tires. To prevent this, I ended up triming the metal lining thats right next to the upper A-arm. Now its been over 1 year and no problems
. I guess the metal lining were shaving the inside tire eveytime the front hits a big bump etc....

With the car on the ground, it seems like the area circled in red could possibly rub when I go over bumps. I did drive over a lot of speed bumps yesterday for about an hour at the airport picking someone up, so I'm wondering if that's the case.
I put some chalk in that area and drove around, and the chalk hasn't rubbed off.
Here is the picture.

in the first picture of the red thing... that is the thing i filed down. you should do that also. this happened on my prelude and i was dropped even less (eibach pro-kit)
Back from the dead.
Toe out of spec was not the cause of the inner wear as posted in the pictures.
The suspension (H&R Sports) lowered too much without enough rate, and basically with high load, the suspension would rub the inner fenderliner eventually cheese grating it like that. I've since changed to 400/500lb springs and the problem hasn't shown, and I'm even lower now...
You can clear notice the inner rubber is "burnt" ish, from the rubbing of the plastic.
