It matters what type of cluster you are putting in. IF you are putting in a cable driven speedo then you need a cable speedo. If you are putting a electronic speedo in then you need an electric vss. Get what I mean?

cable tranny or speedo? if the car was originally equiped with a cable tranny, the the speedo gear has a cable that runs form it and plugs into the back of you cluster, it manually controls the needle, on hydro equiped cars the VSS sends a siganal to the speedo , so as was stated before, if the cluster is for a cbale tranny car then you need a cable speedo gear, and a VSS for a hydro equiped cluster.

Okay well if its d-series car I'm guessing its a Civic.
Pre-91 Civics are all Cable driven
92+ are Electric VSS's

90-93 Integras are Cable driven
94+ are Electric VSS's

If you have a Electric VSS gauge cluster. Meaning if you have a 92+ (Eg, Ek) or 94+ Integras then you have a Electric VSS. This uses wiring there is no direct connection , in a sense.

If you're car falls into the Cable driven categories then you are cable driven which means a cable actually runs from your speedometer to your vehicle speedo (tranny).

so if your car has a Electric VSS Gauge Cluster (where it shows MPH, RPMS, Fuel) you will need a ELECTRIC VSS.

If your car is cable driven Gauge Cluster then you will need a cable and cable driven speedo.

Make sense?

Basically what year car do you have?

It does not matter if your transmission is cable or hydro. It all matters in which gauge cluster you are running.

Example (which is true)
I have a 88 CRX it is cable driven gauge cluster I am running a 94 Integra GSR cluster. I am now running an Electrical VSS. Get what I mean? I am running a Cable tranny, also.

Yes its a civic...Its an EF hatch, so I'm assuming it is a cable speedo. The kid he bought it from last night said that there is a d-series speed sensor in it now. The car won't go into reverse, and the kid insists that the problem is that it has the wrong speed sensor, and its preventing it from doing so. I don't know how true this is since I never worked on a tranny myself. We're just wondering what the proper one would be. Its an LS swapped EF with a b16 trans.

that speed sensor should work for this type of transmission

if not check it is it bolted in
does it spit it out when going into reverse
or get jammed up when trying to go reverse???

u got to give us more info to see if it is actually the VSS or not

D-series and B-series for the most part should be interchangable. A speedo causing it not to go into reverse??? Uh... could be wrong but I don't believe that should affect it.

a d series speed gear will fit just fine, but it won't work so well unless they have the same final drive, a speedo won't keep you car from going into reverse.
my geuss would be the reverse idler arm is bent or broken, or the chnge holder assembly.
does it go into reverse with the engine off? and when you try to go into reverse with it running does it feel like there is no resistance or like your pushing on a brick wall, or does it just scrape?

could be tons of things,

something as simple as broken shift fork, fucked up input, or output shaft bearing.

or you could have some serious damage to the gears inside it.

OK...maybe this will clarify a little....I looked at the car today. What it is, is the peice that connects to the end of the speedo cable, and plugs into the top of the tranny. I tried pulling it out but it seems to be held in by something...we need to identify that peice to find what we need....forgive the cluelessness in this area!
