Default 3rd gear grind

Again background first...1990 Civic LX W/ D16z6 and unknown tranny, my guess is the LX tranny. Where is the tranny stamp?
When shifting quicker from 2 to 3 and downshifting 4 to 3 I get a grind as it goes into gear. But if I shift slow and kinda let the stick "fall" into place which it does about a second or two wait it goes in smoothy and without grind. Is this the syncros going in 3rd??
If so I know with H series trannies its very two sided on whether or not GM Syncromesh is good fix or a quick fix that ends up being a bad fix miles down the road. What do you guys think?

Sounds like your Syncros are going bad, syncromesh is your friend.

wow seems this is VERY common. My question is...WHY only 3rd? is this a design flaw in the tranny?

Maybe because people usually slam the gears in between 2nd and 3rd....

yeah 3rd gear is the first syncro to wear. Usually because it comes natural to shift down, rather than pushing the shifter up to third.

My 91 standard 4spd was granny owned til I got it, and it still grinds 3rd. I doubt she was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd. Just seems like a weak link to me. That said my car has 185k on the odo, so at this point something has got to give!
