2001 Accord Transmission Problem
Transmission not smooth when engine is cold:
-------------------------------------------
I have a 2001 4 cylinder A/T Honda Accord LX.
36300 miles on it. Check Engine light is on.
The OBD-2 codes are: P0700 and P1751.
Symptom: I have Automatic Transmission.
Early morning or on a cold day when I start
Driving the change of gear (from 1 to 2) is
erratic or rough. I try to acclearte it stops a
while and moves with a jerk and then evrything
goes fine.
On a hot day or after some driving...even if I stop
the engine and restart evrything seems fine
no jerks at all.
Why it beahves differently on a cold and hot engine
is puzzling me.

Don't drive, FLY to the dealership. You're having a famous Honda Tranny meltdown. Your car should still be covered by a warranty extension Honda has on those transmissions. If yours is bad, they should be able to replace it for free.
Hi! CMRVi1,
Thank you for your prompt reply. As you might be knowing,
its really diffcult to argue with Honda Dealers for a free repair.
Do you have any supporting documents stating "warranty
extension Honda has on those transmissions". It would
really help a lot.
Thanks,
Mano

2000-01 Accord - ALL
2000-01 Prelude - ALL
Warranty Extension: Accord, Odyssey, and Prelude Automatic Transmission
(Supersedes 02-062, dated September 2, 2003)
BACKGROUND
In certain vehicles, a higher than normal number of
automatic transmissions may have defects in material
or workmanship that could cause premature wear or
failure. To ensure that customers have adequate
warranty coverage, American Honda is increasing the
warranty on the transmission and the torque converter
to 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Could you please tell me if a 1999 is covered also under this extended warranty program? Mine with less than 49K miles is having the same problem (a V6 model). Should be...right? Considering it's the same generation as the 2000. Thanks.
Hi! cmrvi1,
Thanks for the ext.warranty info. I talked to HOnda cust.svc filed a case
and took my car to the nearest dealer. Got my transmission replaced
in a week. Car is running fine now. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi
I brought the car to the dealer after talking to Customer Relations at Honda. The code came up as P1706. According to the dealer's service rep, the problem is with a shifting switch in the transmission, and said it should be changed out. Are you familiar with that? The oil is light brownish and smells bad. The shifting is erratic (like it's hunting for the right gear sometimes) and there's some slipping. Could a $150 switch cause all that? I am more concern that it's the wear inside the transmission that's causing the swith to go bad and replacing it would not address the root problem. Any suggestions would help before spending $400+ to have them replace that part. Thanks.

emejin,
I have replaced those solenoids in several transmissions at the dealership, and have yet to see that approach fix the problem. That's an expensive "let's-see-what-happens".
You're right about a root problem. The major cause of problems with these transmissions is a bearing starts to wear and sends metal particles throughout the internals causing all kinds of shifting problems.

Hi,
Mbaral, I have the same problem with my Accord 2001, I was wondering if they ever told you why you have this problem? Today the D4 light was flashing while I just started driving, and the check engine light went on too. The garage guys say that something told them it's a transmission problem, they don't have the right equipmentto read codes for 2001s-only 2000 and earlier.
I'm going to the dealer this week so do you have information that will help me be prepared not to be charged for things that I shouldn't? I only have 25k on it now.
and need to drive an hour to get to the closest dealer.
Thanks!

Same thing. All I get it a list of TSB titles. I can't see the TSB itself. And I get this note...

Maybe you have an AllData subscription as a repair shop or something. Honda doesn't want ordinary mortals to read that stuff.

I'm having similar problems (rough when cold, fine when hot) with my 98--I4. Dealer checked it out and no codes or odd readings. Tech One (?) suggested that they drain and refill tranny three times. Did it. No change. Now what? Do we need to band together somewhere and demand that Honda replace the trannies. I bought this thing because I figured that hondas were bullet proof. (And if I could have found a 5sp nearby I would have jumped on it, believe me.) I can get a 90k tranny breakdown with a good old US car--last count, 6 US cars and 5 trannies in the last 12 years.
