Default 88-91 exterior questions

whats up yall, im thinking about getting an EF hatch for a project car, and i gotta question. Appearance wise, what are the differences between 88-89 and 90-91 hatchbacks, if any? For some reason, whenever i see them on the road, the Si just looks so much better than the dx and std models. But i cant exactly notice what if anything is different about them? I mean are all the body panels the same? I cant figure this one out.

You're welcome! The front end sheetmetal on the 88-89, to the 90-91's are different. Bumpers and corner lights are the most noticable. Corner lights on 88-89's have screw holes you can see. Bumpers look different, and so on.

The Si on the 90-91's just has a lip and painted bumpers, makes it look much better.

I'm not completely possitive, but I don't think so. Honda ususally updates front sheet metal every 2 years but I dont think they touched the back.

The only thing I can think of in the rear would be the stock tails.

The headlights have different mounting for the corners. The 90-91 screw into the headlight bracket where the 88-89 are into the fender. The tails don't matter. The side moldings are different. 88-89 have the ridge in the middle of the molding where 90-91 is smooth. 88-89 moldings are the same as JDM. Seatbelt are in the doors in 90-91 and in the pillar in 88-89. Also the seats are different, and the plug you use to set the timming is under the pass of the dash on a 90-91 whereas 88-89 is drivers side of the engine bay near the motor mount. The cigarette lighter stays on when the vehicle is off in 88-89 and 90-91 it turns off with the ignition. 88 has ITR style LCAs in the rear. 88 also has a smaller clutch with different splines. Thats all I can think of off hand.

90-91 Si

90-91 DX STD (This lip is not stock.)

88-89 DX JDMFrontend Note the side moldings 88-89only

I figured those would be good for refference.

thanks. i like the one with the si wheels the best. i used to think the jdm front end looked best, but im not so sure anymore. Whichever i decide will end up being gutted and having a gsr block in it and a hydro b16 tranny and will be lowered on either gsr, ls, or si rims.

i know that the door's and door windows are different.. the side mirror's that i got from 88-89 dont fit my 90. and as far as anything else.. the lights in the rear are different.. at least on the 4 door they are. but i am not to sure about the hatch.. but i think they are my friend has a 91 hatch Si and he says that the 88-89 are different.
