I've recently purchased a used 1993 Accord, strictly for commuting purposes, and I've noticed something funny about the cooling fan. When I turn the car off the fan sometimes stays on for 5-10 minutes is this normal? Currently I'm pulling the rad fan relay off to ensure the fan stays off. Can someone please help me? I'm affraid this will kill my battery

 

I also have a 93 Accord, I've got 325,000 miles and it's been doing that for the last 200,000 or so of those miles, even when it's not that hot out, apparenlty something is goofy but I have yet to have a dead battery due to it.

 

That engine-off fan running is normal. There is a thermoswitch that senses the coolant temperature after shutdown. If temp exceeds 108C (226F), the fan comes on to cool the engine. This prevents overheating and possible damage to head gasket and other parts due to "heat soak" from the stopped engine. Many other brands have a similar feature.

it is normal... as the tempreture switch for the fan are on the thermostat housing and not on the radiator it can take a while for the tempreture to drop before the fans shut off. In the owners manual, it says the fan can run for upto 15 minutes after the engine is shut off!!

 

I have had the same problem in the past and it is totaly normal.Your fan will stay on after the car is off to ensure the radiator is cooled. It will stay on until the radiator temp. drops to the normal temp were then it will shut off. Taking out the relay just makes matters worse because by taking it out your radiator doesnt cool and you can overheat and more problems can happen. Even if it does keep running it doesnt draw that much power especially to kill your battery.

 

I have the same problem with my accord now. The fan will stay on then turn off. However it does this all night and it does drainn the battery. I constantly have to jump start the car from the fan staying on. Now I just pull the relay, until I can find out the problem........checked thermoswitch and replaced relay...same thing.

 

according to teh sticker next to your radiator it is normal for the fan to turn on and run for a short while after you turn the car off.
