A missing roll pin is a very bad thing. If the pin is missing, you won't be able to engage into any gear. The shifter would just flop around.

the shifter bushings could be shot.
polyurethane bushings are like $20, and vastly improve shift feel, even with a stock shifter.
or your trans. could be shot...like broken/worn shift forks or something.

it goes in gear some time and a couple of days ago i looked at the torqe bar and where it cups around the shifter there is some hitting goin on from the bottom of the shifter. and a gouge out of the side of the shifter. it seems like its hitting somethin. no grinding is goin on. changed the oil and put some lucas in it. banged on the linkage a little and it shifted great for like 2 weeks (lke butter) and now started goin bad any other ideas

when my bitch pin (roll pin) had just 1mm of play or less to each side i started in third gear. it would feel like i was putting it in first but the play in the linkage allowed it to move and the place it connnected onto the tranny wasnt turning enough to get it into first.

replace the pin if theres any play in it (go to honda). replace your bushings if the problem persists. if those thing dont work, your linkage COULD be bent/damaged. maybe check out your clutch? do some adjustments? if its not going into gear thats a sign of clutch failure. just a thought.

lift car, place jack stands, tighten all the nuts and bolts coming from the shifter.

Don't know what kind of car you have, but I'll guess maybe a crx and the hatch is probably similar, and not being able to see it, but it sounds more like something is loose and/or your bushings are shot. Having to pull your shifter all the way towards you doesn't sound like the roll pin...it connects the other end of your shift linkage to the transmission.

i have this exact same problem too, i just did a swap and the linkage is brand new so i know it's not that....the problem was that the linkage i bought from AZ race and machine didn't have a big enough hole for the bitch pin so the bolt we put through it is the right size for the linkage but too small for the hole on the transmission that the linkage connects to

How much could a roll pin from Honda cost?
You know, fixing things right instead of ghetto and sketch.
