Default Wire gauge and amp power

My friend an I have been fighting over a simple easy thing. Is 8 gauge wire signifigant for a MTX 500x1 or is it gonna starv it. so lets settle this. What wire would you use to wire your 500watt CEA compliant amp.

I've got 8 guage running my 600W amp and it sounds good and I have never had any problems. But just incase you upgrade in the future, go with the 4 Guage...

Use the wire calculator on this page to determine exactly what gauge wire you will need for a given amp power rating...
http://www.bcae1.com/wire.htm
You also have to factor in the length of the wire.

for the price diference, it's worth it to do a little overkill, why starve the amp if it wants the power, I'd run 4ga for a single amp, it if was a small high's amp I might only run 8ga, but for most any sub amp I'd run a minimum of 4ga, it'll never hurt to go oversize...ask your girl she'll tell ya bigger is better

depends on how the amp acts... if it gets really hot, or clips (cuts in and out) it means that it needs more power...

4awg, but if the amp can't even take a 4awg bare wire, useless.
If the amp takes a 8 awg bare, tehn all u need is an 8awg main wire.

8 Gauge is probably enough for the amp alone. I run 8 gauge to my amps, the most powerful of which is 120x4@ 4 ohms (pretty big amp, although I don't use all that power).

If I were to wire a car though, I'd simply go 4 gauge and run through a simple distribution block - run the 8gauge out of that to the amp. This leaves room for upgrade, and it isn't overdoing it.

There is no reason to go over about 4 gauge unless you are redoing the electrical system (at least on our puny Hondas).

There ya go.

what is the amp fused for? that should be a good indication of what size wire to use. doesnt the manual tell you which size wire is the minimum?
