I believe the only way you can tell is by actually putting it in and driving it.

Any way to tell what year? I'm looking for a 90-91 and I'm not sure how to tell without cracking it open.

I don't know of any way to tell without counting the splines.. on the input shaft or fitting on a 90-91 clutch

Counting the splines is the correct method

Yes but the 89-91 crx trannies all have 20 splines.. I think he is asking how to tell an 89 from a 90-91..

Try the "put it in X gear and count rotations" method
best by far.

Unless he pulled it off the motor, that is the only way to figure it out that I know of.
89-91 are the same, 88 is different. Only difference between 89 and the 90-91 is the clutch disk had a smaller diameter in 89, but spline count was the same.

10 (number of times u spin the spline) / B - (5th gear on a Si trans) / C - (FD for Si trans) = X.XX (number of times the differential spins)

now find out what B (5th gear in a Si trans) and C (FD for Si trans) and you should get the number of times the differential spins

heres an example i did recently on a hydro Bseries, i knew it was a JDM hydro b16, but i check just in case if it was an LS..

10 (number of times u spin the spline) / .787 - (5th gear on GSR/EG SiR) / 4.4 - (FD for GSR/EG SiR) = 2.88 (number of times the differential spins)

now if it was an LS...
10 / .717 (LS 5th) / 4.266 (LS FD) = 3.2 (times the diff spins)

in the end it turned out to be a b16 tranny

For the year check the end of the input shaft for grooves going around. no groove is a 88 model, 1 groove is a 89, and 2 grooves is a 90-91. They go around the tip of the input shaft like a watch goes around your wrist.

thanks for your guys help. It helped me out a lot. Know that i found out it was a SI tranny I am going to put it in my can so i can get this grinding tranny out of my car. Grinds High RPM's in 2nd, and anytime over 3000RPM's going into 3rd, and when ever it feel like it in 4th gear. This tranny is just messed up.
