Default I faild smog again! sigh.

Heyas guys,

Ive got a 88 CRX DX in california. Now I went to a test only by accident i didnt realize they were test only untill my car was on the dyno. They let you test once and retry once. anywho, the first time my N0 levels were: 875 max, 925. FAIL. so I got my new NGK wires and plugs (cheap ones) and I cleaned out my throttle body, Ran some injector cleaner through. I made sure to drive it around before the test, but today I got N0 lvls 875 max, 1250. I was told that high N0 lvls come from high temps in the combustion chamber, and could be carbon build up. Now I dont think they sell "sea foam" here in cali. I found a test and fix place accross the street and they told me that they are first going to have to run a diagnostic which runs $79, and thats not even for the repaires they are probably going to rape me on. If you guys know anything else about this please post it. Im planning to swap a DOHC ZC in my car ASAP and I wanted to pass smog with this engine because I was told the JDM ZC wont pass smog. I was hoping this engine would save me money. I can "pass" smog for about $200. Ok beside what I might learn from this post, this is what im thinking my options are........

-take it to the diagnostic, and see what they say.....hopefully not get too raped.
-take it to the special smog place and pass for 200.
-replace my cat with a new performace cat back, which I was planning to get after the DOHC ZC, but it would be a new cat so incase my cats bad, then retest.
-Or just get the DOHC ZC (cuz i want it bad) then save up later to go to the special place and pass smog and hope I dont get pulled over in the mean time.

Thanks

i'd do that. you wont get pulled over unless they give you a reason..soooo dont give them a reason. and in the unlikely event you do. have an excuse of sorts ready to go. Best one I can think of give your info: tell them you have an appointment with your "smog passer" and you're on your way over there..or will be shortly. good luck

Change your O2 sensor.
When they get old tehy get lazy and don't necessarily throw a fault code with a CEL.
I've had it happen before and it failed NO really badly.
Everything else passed fairly well.
Since the O2 wasn't working well, it was making the engine run lean = high combustion temps.

Post your other numbers up to make it a bit easier to diagnose.

The only 88~89 DX's that have EGR's are the automatics.
The manual ones do not have an EGR.

Do you have an automatic "amh0001"???

In California, modified imports are frowned upon. Even if you obey every traffic law in the book, you can still be pulled over for something, unless the oustide of your car is 100% stock, and your exhaust is similar to stock in appearance and sound. They've heard every excuse in the book.

Haha,

my car is manual. And the outside is bare stock. i wanna keep my car sleeper. The problem with cops is that, I bought the car with out of state plates and expired registration. I need smog to register. Oh and my timing is as low as it can go. Honda allows up to 2 degrees off of 18, I was at 16. I checked with kragen, I can get an o2 sensor for about 50 bucks. and the smog place will want $79 for diagnostics. Wow I cant even Imagine the registration fees comming up.. I just want my engine.

thanks for the info guys, keep it commin

First of all, post all the results, not just NoX. Check ignition timing. U can try setting it back to 14 degrees to help u out a lil bit. Also, try running some "top engine cleaner" from a GM dealership. It does wonders to clean and rid the head of carbon. I did the things i mentioned and i also truned up my fuel psi a little bit(via a FPR) and it brought my NoX down, but still kept the HC and CO beneath the max allowed. Good luck. Your best bet would be the top engine cleaner stuff.

No i cant lower my timing any more, its as low as it can go to pass smog.

but here are my numbers.

Type Max Meas
HC
15 142 77
25 117 33

CO
15 .86 .28
25 .76 .14

NO
15 873 1240
25 812 898

Try throwing a dirty air filter in there
Seriously though, it might work.

go take a vacation to Nevada for 2 days, get a PO box, get your car reg'ed there and get your license there. It'll be way cheaper ($60) than dealing with Cali smog laws. I recommend Lake Tahoe, NV

No.
Then his Co's and HC's will go up.
He's have to have a calibrated dirty air filter.

The HC's and CO's would be through the roof if it were the cat.

My guess - the O2.

If you change the O2 be sure to set your timing to stock and not retarded or advanced. The O2 fixing your lean condition will pull your CO's up a little. If your ignition is retarded as well then it will burn even less fuel and the CO's will go higher.

Retarding the timing a bit (still within spec) DOES in fact help a little bit (because it lowers combustion temps). The guy only needs a little bit of help to pass. He already stated that he did this already, so its out of the question. About my dirty air filter comment...u obviously must be picturing this 50 year old filter with small birds and stuff caught in it. I meant one with some flow inhibited to help richen his motor up, since thats what he needs. As you can see from his numbers, he has quite a bit of room in the HC and CO area to play around with. If those numbers were borderline, i wouldnt have said **** except try the GM top engine cleaner. The equivelent to a dirty air filter would be a FPR with fuel psi turned up 2-5 psi. It worked for me!! I've been there and done that

ouch, didnt notice the california location. reading owns me. I got pulled over for a cracked windshield and the cop was like there's no way any of this is legal. this suspension alteration definitely isnt right, etc. I just smiled and went along with it, didnt give me any grief really. Here in Pennsylvania there's no emission testing. Really helps inspection time go more smooth
