after i clean em up with brake cleaner, i prepare the engine for the pistons to be pressed in by taking tranny oil and lubing up the cylinder walls

If your unsure about this kind of work on your motor, you should probably take it to a perfessional and have them hot-tank it for you. This is the best way to clean it anyhow.

what kind of soap? Laundry detergent? dish soap? I am in the same situation, and I wanna clean my engine too, so this is good information. Is it worth cleaning inside the head while its off of the block? Since my spare motor is really old (1987 D16A1 Brown top), is it worth cleaning all the carbon deposits off of the pistons? I guess it don't matter since Im putting in different ones in anyway.

Take the block and get it jet-washed (can't hot tank aluminum) .. cheap and saves the fingers!

Everyone says to use Simple Green and degreaser to clean blocks but what if grease/oil/dirt is not the only thing on the block?

Look at my current problem child. It looks like it's been on the Titanic for a century. How the hell would you remove this stuff:

word, if you're looking for the shine. .a wire brush will do it. . if you're just tryign to clean the gunk off, a hot tank MAY do it. . The last block i got hot tanked came back clean of grime, but it still looked used. . if you're looking for the gloss, then take a wire brush to it. .

This is my friend motor after we wire brushed it. . . (we didn't spend that much time on it, but you still get the idea. . (and yes, we definitely changed that nasty *** valve cover and oil cap. . .oh, and the harness is all tucked away now too. . .

I got the fine wire brush drill bit at Home Depot and went medieval on the block last night. It did a good job removing all the crap but I couldn't really get it to even up the scratches. It doesn't look all that great. Not even close to the polished one above. Going to wash it at a dealer tank today (not sure it's a hot tank) and will post picture after.

At least all that yellow coral reef **** is gone now

yeah I'd take it a machine shop and let them clean it.

you could spray paint it silver afterwards or something.
