DC2R JDM Cat vs Carsound hi-flow cat
If you had a choice of a JDM cat or a Carsound hi-flow cat at the same price 2nd hand. which one would you take?
Would there be much difference between flow?
Thanks!!

Thanks! ahah
we'll i've got both sitting right infront of me... just deciding which one to take.
JDM cat - straight bolt on
Carsound - need to get 2.5" flanges
same price *shrugs*

Info from SMSP Dave awhile back:
"Cat Convertor flow rates
1) Catco (metal core) 2.25" 223.8 cfm
2) Catco (metal core) 2.5" 271.9 cfm
3) Catco (std. core) 2.25" 338.2 cfm
4) Catco (std. core) 2.5" 388.0 cfm
5) Random Tech 2.25" 297.1 cfm
6) Car Sound 2.25" 342.7 cfm
7) Test Pipe 2.25" 407.1 cfm
8) Stock NSX 242.1 cfm
9) Stock Type R 223.6 cfm
10) Stock Integra 218.3 cfm
The newer 2.5" Carsound's should flow over 400 cfm (talk to Dave at SMSP for actual figures).
A high-flow cat. is absolutely worth the expense. In fact, if given the choice between a new header paired with the stock cat. or a stock manifold paired with a 2.25" Carsound, I'd choose the Carsound. The stock cat. is really a severe bottleneck in the ITR (or any Integra) exhaust system."

all that flow info is good, but how often would it have to be replaced at what cost compared to a jdm cat? and then the average joe smo would he ever feel the difference if given the blind test?

Personally I don't care, as long as it flows better, and is cheaper than the JDM blingness.

You can asnwer that one can't you, when you compare your test pipe.
There is a difference in flow obviously. I'd guess it's more important when tuning and or relating to a more aggressive setup. But when most of us did our headers JDM and otherwise, they required a different length cat. Why not then go for the best flowing one of matching diameter, that is cost effective?

So a JDM cat, lets say 150-200
and a aftermarket made to fit for 150-200
You would rather replace the aftermarket once a year at $200, then set it and forget it?

First off your price for an OEM cat is pretty low, JDM or otherwise. An OEM USDM cat from the dealer is somewhere near $600. last time I looked. If you can get a bunch of JDM cats for like $150. or so then I suggest getting as many as possible and reselling them here for some change, the guys on ClubSi and SHO would eat them up.
If you can get a JDM cat for cheap that's fine, it's your choice. Rodney has one and used to use it when he still streeted his hatch but the power difference between the JDM cat and his test pipe was definitely noticable and different.
I personally have had my Carsound for 4 years now with no real quality issues. True, some do tend to have heat shields that rattle and others have been reported to Not pass Some state Emissions (Including NY).
But for the price as compared to OEM brand new, you could own 3 for the price of one and swap if and when an issue might arise while maintaining the best flow possible and or having the upgraded model from SMSP that includes the heat shields retacked and another bung for wideband tuning.

I can accept that.
I can accept that.
I would recommend the jdm itr cat. I agree with bbasso. but my reasoning is because it is oem. direct bolt on. you don't have to buy new cats all the time and also a new pair of flanges. on top of that the labor to the shop for welding. (unless you are doing it yourself) why? so much trouble. also think about all the R & D time HONDA put into this. and my last thing. why use magnaflow. its garbage. but there's my .02
oh and I have used the carsound, oem, jdm oem. but right now I am using the spoon test pipe.

So are the Carsounds that are sold through IPS racing and SMSP, at least the one I got was and already had the flange ready to go.

This I didn't really understand. I don't remember hearing of the Carsound imploding all to often as opposed to the Catco or Random which had a sketchy history.

If that's the case, why replace your OEM model at all? Oh you want a different header? Well there was so much R&D invested with your OEM header, they why would you want that as well? This point has never been a big sell with me.

What makes you say that? You mention that you used one below, what was your experience? Just stating it was garbage doesn't clarify the issue any.

So passing emissions is Not a big issue with you then.

Com'on Anton we all know that any JDM header is worth 40+ hp

Sounds odd for an OEM cat to be that low, has to be a used part. All OEM Cats use a Metal Core and that is why when you call a Dealer OEM Cats vary from $600-1000. I could go out and build 2.5" Metal Core Cats that would last 5-10 years or so but how many people are willing to shell out $500 for the cat? If you think long run you might but most of the people out there just want what is cheaper and will work for now.
I'd say to go with the CarSound for a few reasons (Some may vary depending on setup)
JDM one is only 2.25" on the outlet, not 2.5"
JDM one is shorter (12") so if you don't have a JDM length exhaust you have to add an extension to the exh or cat or make an adapter to fill the space.
JDM one has a Bung for a small heat sensor but not for an O2 Bung so you would have to remove or plug the Heat sensor bung and weld in an O2 Bung. Even if you buy it for $150-200 your spending another $100-150 just in parts to get it to work.
Also 95% of my Carsound cats have been out there for years with NP, In all the years I have sold and made cats I have only had 7 or 8 come back with a broken catalyst or burnt out. Both symptons usually due to manufacturer defect (there was a bad run of them back 1-2 years ago) or to the car burning to much fuel or oil and melting or blocking up the catalyst.

well... my 3rd aftermarket cat is not working correctly (after only ~3,000 miles of use) (I used 2 different brands and 3 different styles) so I am looking for something (OEM) that will work.
I have a high compression motor making around 200whp right now and it's tuned by hondata (not rich or lean).
I have been told (by AJR) that if I run a cat, the heat from my higher compression motor will burn any cat (even a hi flow one). Could anyone verify this? I really want to use either a carsound or JDM ITR cat for my car!
